The Washington & Jefferson College women’s swimming and diving team continued its fast start with three victories, while the men’s squad posted a 1-2 showing on Saturday at the Case Western Reserve Invitational.
The W&J women notched victories over Case Western Reserve (185-114), Grove City (162-137) and Kenyon (151-138), while the men’s team dropped decisions to Case Western Reserve (183-116) and Grove City (206-92), but defeated Kenyon by a 203-85 margin.
Leading the way for the Washington & Jefferson women was freshman Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone), who claimed both diving events and improved her NCAA Division III Championship qualifying mark on the 3-meter board. She won the 3-meter event with 269.10 points and also posted the top point total at 1-meter (243.65).
The Presidents also notched a victory the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.25 which counts as the fastest dual-meet time in school history. Senior Susanne Seward (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) and freshmen Elizabeth Adamski (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Notre Dame), Katie Steider (Cochranton, Pa./Meadville) and Ellie Tecza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) swam legs on the winning relay.
Steider also claimed the 50 backstroke (26.68), while freshman Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) won the 200 IM (2:14.17) and 200 freestyle (1:59.67).
Freshman C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) was victorious in the 50 breaststroke (32.39), while senior Brittany Bertoli (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:02.87).
The W&J men were paced by freshmen Michael Boutwell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) and Justin Weifenbach (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour).
Boutwell won the 1000 freestyle (10:04.81) and nearly broke his own school record. He also placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:56.78).
Weifenbach took top honors in the 1-meter diving event with 222.75 points. He topped that point total in the 3-meter event (239.40) during his second-place finish.
The Presidents will have two weeks off before returning to action at the James E. Longnecker Invitational hosted by Grove City College.
