Sea Gulls finish in fourth place at the Golden Bear Invitational

KUTZTOWN, Pa. , November 22nd, 2008           

The Salisbury University swimming program traveled to Kutztown University to partake in the Golden Bear Invitational and finished fourth overall in both the men's (256 points) and women's (247 points) final results. Salisbury was one of five teams to compete in the two-day invitational. The other four teams were host Kutztown University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Montclair State University and Ocean County College. Stevens Tech swept the event as the men finished with 705 points and the women compiled 655 points.

At the conclusion of Friday's events, Salisbury sat in fifth place on the women's side with 122 points. The Sea Gulls rallied on Saturday afternoon to overtake East Stroudsburg University for fourth place overall in the invitational.

On Friday, sophomore Katy Turner turned in the best finish for the Sea Gulls on the day as she took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.93. Senior Raienne South finished in sixth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a final time of 57.87 seconds.

Turner had a good day on Saturday, as well, as she finished fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:59.09) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.52 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay team also had a great swim on Saturday. The team of junior Angie Hammond, freshmen Robin Stone, Kelly Closs, and South finished with a time of 2:00.96 to place fifth overall.

Salisbury's men's team stood in fourth place after Friday's events with 120 points and was poised to add to that total on Saturday.

In Friday's events, junior Mike Ferrari placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke, the highest finish for any Sea Gull men's swimmer on the day, with a time of 1:04.57. The men also fared well in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of seniors Brad Buckley and Benjamin Overholt, sophomore John Lorman and Ferrari touched the wall with a time of 1:33.28 to finish fifth.

Saturday proved to be a stronger day for the men as they had some good individual swims. Overholt came in sixth overall in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.20 and also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.89 seconds). Sophomore Tim Metcalf rounded out the men's day with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (58.60 seconds).     

The Sea Gulls will next travel to York, Pa., on December 6, to compete in a tri-meet with Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College and non-conference opponent Goucher College at 1 p.m.
