Nathan Young (So., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) won three events, but St. Mary’s turned in 10 first-place finishes to beat Macalester 127-91 in an MIAC dual meet at Riley Pool as the Scots are handed their first dual meet defeat after gaining victories earlier against Wisconsin-River Falls and Hamline.
Young, a national meet competitor as a frosh, placed first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.26), 100 freestyle (50.04) and 100 backstroke (57.91).
Paco Venneri (Fy., Los Alamos, N.M.), Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani School) and Jens Tamang (So., Portland, Ore. / Caitlin Gabel) each turned in a pair of runner-up efforts. Venneri placed second in the 1000 freestyle (12:28.27) and 500 free (5:53.89), Yamashita was second in the 50 free (22.85) and 100 butterfly (57.58). The Scots also received a second-place finish from Emmett Costel (So., Maputo, Mozambique / Monona).
The Scots host the 12th annual Macalester Invitational tomorrow in a meet featuring opponents from St. Mary’s, Hamline and St. Thomas.
Macalester dominated its rivals in a 127-94 MIAC dual meet triumph over Saint Mary’s at Riley Pool to improve to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference competition. The Scots had 13 first-place finishes and received three winning efforts from Clare Pillsbury (Fy., Baraboo, Wis.).
Pillsbury reached the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.15), 100 butterfly (1:05.51) and 100 backstroke (1:06.04).
Mac double event winners were Annie Flanagan (Sr., Madison, Wis. / East) in 1-meter (241.30) and 3-meter diving (258.10), Karoline Hart (Fy., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) in the 50-yard freestyle (25.85) and 200 free (56.98), and Hillary Frey (Fy., Portland, Ore. / St. Mary’s Academy) in the 200 individual medley (2:21.95) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.26).
Kate Vermann (So., Bronx, N.Y. / Fieldston School) won the 1000-yard free (12:07.86) and Grace Fleming (Fy., Northampton, Mass.) took first in the 500 free (5:27.23).
Winning the 400-yard medley relay (4:35.27) were Clare Eder (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township), Hart, Kiersten Yeazel (So., Shorewood, Wis.) and Alex Cortes (Sr., Berkeley, Calf. / Head-Royce). The 200 freestyle relay team reached the wall first (1:49.04) behind the efforts of Angie Marvin (Sr., Warroad, Minn.), Fleming, Frey and Anna Gajewski (Jr., Wausau, Wis. / East).
