The Iowa State swimming and diving team went right back to work Saturday defeating both Western Illinois and South Dakota State in the double-dual meet at Beyer pool. The Cyclones defeated Western Illinois 190.5-47.5 and South Dakota State 187-55.
The swimmers were led by a strong performance from junior Abby Glaser. Glaser swam the third leg of Iowa States winning 400 medley relay team (3:55.91). Glaser then went on to win the 100 backstroke (1:00.82), marking the 25th win of her career. Glaser was also a part of the winning 400 free relay team (3:39.32) Head coach Duane Sorenson was pleased with her efforts.
Abby swam the 100 back for the first time in an ISU dual meet and she did a nice job. She slowed down a little at the end but she has potential there.
Junior Frances Calzada also picked up a trio of victories winning the 50 freestyle (24.65), the 100 freestyle (53.37), and she was a member of the 400 free relay team. Junior Lindsey Behrens picked up a pair of victories on the day winning the 200 freestyle (1:55.60) and the 100 butterfly (58.04). Sophomore Jeli Nixt was a member of the 400 medley relay team and won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.50) Sorenson was pleased with their effort as well.
Frances has been miss consistent all the way though and she did a nice job anchoring the 400 free, said Sorenson. Jeli wanted to swim well in the 100 breast because we knew South Dakota State had a really good breaststroker. Lindsey used a different strategy in her races and she did outstanding as far as how she has been, she had a lifetime best in the 100 breast so good all-around day for her.
After picking up the first win of her career the pervious night, freshman Taylor Vieau picked up her second career win in the 400 IM (4:42.22). Sophomore Chelsea Tomek recorded the first victory of her career in the 500 freestyle (5:12.50), Vieau finished second (5:13.10). Sophomore Jenny Vondenkamp picked up her first win of the season winning the 1650 yard freestyle (17:32.57).
In diving, junior Tien Tran continued her dominance winning the 1-meter, recording a season-high score of 274.40. Senior Kali Fryklund came in second (245.35). Tran also won 3-meter diving (279.20) with Fryklund coming in second (238.70) and freshman Jenn Botsch finishing fourth (219.90). Diving Coach Jeff Warrick was happy with Tiens day.
She had a really good day on 1-meter, that a little higher than last night, really solid performance, Warrick said. She is more consistent than she was last season, not as many of the ups and downs that she had last season. 3-meter was a little off, not as good as she was yesterday, and I dont know if that was from a second day in a row diving but we will work with it.
Warrick also had praise for Fryklund and Botschs performances.
Kali did really well on 1-meter, her score jumped up again, she had a good solid list of dives, Warrick said. On 3-meter, she scored ten points higher than last night so that is good. That was a really good confidence boosting performance for Jenn on 3-meter, I know she can do that all the time we are going to see bigger and harder dives from here soon and that will help her score increase.
The Cyclones will take a couple of weeks off before traveling to Nebraska for the Nebraska Invitational Nov. 20-23.
