.: Ranking the Classes: Others To Watch

Somers, WI , May 28th, 2008

Beyond the top twenty-five, here's another thirty interesting story lines to keep an eye on.

Others to keep an eye on

Alabama – Joe Ziegler is a top ten recruit.

Arizona State – Joey Hale – He’s signed his release, but will the #3 sprinter have a team in September.

Boston College – Tom Groden’s 11-man class highlighted by Andrew Clancy (#14 in 200 breast).

Boston University – At 45.0, Jackson Hill becomes best BU recruit in history.

Buffalo – Bulls making a charge with backstrokers Jake Sangren and Jared Heine and Michigan state champ Chris Berloth.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps – 56.5/2:03.8 breaststroker Vincent Pai (apparently no relation to the Oxy backstroker) gives D-3 fans visions of a new Boss.

Denison – Maybe its the Red Wings logo on their caps, but Big Red raids Wolverine state for guys like Dan Thurston and Michael Barczak.  They'd have ranked 29th among Division I teams.

Denver – Brian Schrader steals another stud from the big boys.  Clayton Myers ranks 4th in the long IM and Tyler Pennington (miler not the home builder) isn’t far off.

Duke – Colella signs kids in all events – including flyer Ben Tuben and Freestyler Nathan French

Florida State – The Seminoles don’t sign a big class, but they sign one with a long name – IRCC’s Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw.  The sprinter is the #5 sprint flyer and #45 overall.

Grand Valley – Jeremy Sall, #98 overall, stays in state and gives new GVSU coach a good start.

Grove City – Adds Sprinter Kirk Gagliardo – returns Caleb Courage – could they make a run?

Illinois-Chicago – The Flames continue to improve as their scholarship pool grows.  Paul Moniak keeps Chicagoland’s top distance swimmer and top breaststroker not named Alden in the city.

Iowa – Hawkeyes’ best class in years.  Duncan Partridge and Ryan Phelan are #16 & 24 in the 50 Free and versatile Paul Gordon is a Big Ten scorer.

Kentucky – Grant Cooksey is a top 10 Breaststroker.

Kenyon – Wisconsin’s Ian Bakk is top breaststroke signee for the Lords.

Michigan – They get to count Dan Madwed for a second time after he sits out a year.  Otherwise recruiting shut down before Bowman left town.

Michigan State – Above average class for team generally overshadowed Michigan – Jason Lintjer is their best in-state pickup since John Munley

Missouri Tech – Andy Schranck, #92 Overall, is a one-man recruiting class – fly, back, sprint, IM, you name it, MIST got a good one.

Redlands – D3 school scores major coup when hometown boy Tyler Harp #25 50 free stays home.

South Carolina – Gets two of top five in-staters (other three to Clemson) for a solid all-around first effort.

Southern Illinois – Matt Kruse is legit and represents best American signee in years.

SMU – The Mustangs’ stable isn’t usually a big one, but a high percentage make the big show.  This class is like that with Blaz Korosec and Mitchell Thompson (both top ten in 2Fly and mile respectively) and sprinter Walter Rumans.

Tennessee – JT goes back to his homestate to pick up #1 backstroker Ricky Henahan.  Breaststrokers Derek Paul and Jake Epperson supplement last year’s #2 class.

Texas Christian – Jack Doran will be immediate C-USA player.  NCAA’s possible down the road if he continues current trend.

Tufts – Anytime a D-3 gets a sub-21 its news.  Owen Rood is front page material.

UNLV – Swimmin’ Rebels nab two big ones.  Andrew Morrell is ranked 7th in the 200 breast while Steve Nelms is a top-eight sprinter.

Utah – Swiss Flyere Simon Oberholzer brings Utah to big meet. China’s known for great diving and Utah gets one in Foo Chun Li.

Western Kentucky – Sun shines on Sun Belt when Cameron Watkins, Hoosier state’s number-two picks Hilltoppers.

Wyoming – Cowboys lasso nation’s top prep breaststroker in Brandon Fischer.  He’s more advanced than Scott Usher was at this age and nobody gave much notice to him . . . until he made the Olympic team.
