.: Ranking the Classes: #6 - California

May 20th, 2008

#7 California

Let the controversy over the #1 recruit begin.  Coaches were split between Kathleen Hersey and Sara Isakovic, but we're giving the Slovenan superstar.  When converted, her times give her the top slot in the 100 and 200 free and second spot in the 100 fly and even .  While Hersey might claim more championships (and possibly an Olympic berth), there's no doubting the Isakovic Impact on relays.

But relays aren't built on just one swimmer - that's where Liv Jensen comes in.  She's the fastest woman in this years class, and when teamed with Isakovic give Cal the top two in the 100 freestyle.  How about that for firepower?  Now add in Shelly Harper (top-20 in the 500) and Mattea Perrota (top-20 in the 200) and you're looking at potentially legendary relays.  Kirstyn Colonias, a rising breastsroker completes an impressive class for Teri McKeever.

"We're really excited on two different levels," explained McKeever. "We're certainly excited about the California flavor that we are bringing in. These young women have a huge upside to their athletic ability. On the other hand, we are bringing in an international flavor as well to our program. These girls will bring valued experience to Cal and they will be a nice compliment to what we have here."

A rival coach’s perspective: “Pure theft.  They get Isakovic (who is SICK), they steal Jensen and Perrotta from the Stanford and SC club teams."
