.: Ranking the Classes: #3 - Georgia

May 20th, 2008

#3 Georgia

Last year Georgia didn't just have the best recruiting class - they were head and shoulders above the rest.  This year's class is impressive, but for a different reason.   Jack Bauerle introduced them as "not only talented young swimmers, but they’re also exceptional people."  What they aren't, though, are homegrown.  This year nine of the top ten went over the border with four of the five going to rivals Texas, and UNC, and especially painful exports to Auburn and Tennessee.

That didn't stop the Bulldogs from sending out their own raiding parties and picking up the top breaststroker, top miler and top backstroker in the country.  McKeehan is the best they've had since Kristy Kowal, but she offers a little more versatility.  Need a sub-23 relay split?  She can do it.  Sub-4:20 IM?  No problem.  Top eight finish in the 2IM?  She can do that too.  Kristen Shickora continues extends the legacy of Pennsylvanians.  She's #1 in the 200 back and #2 over half that distance.  South African Wendy Trott arrives in the states as good as anyone in distance events.  The Bulldogs continue to stockpile the best 200 freestylers in the country.  A year after recruiting an All-American 800 freestyle relay they add Abigail Fish, Allison Schmitt and Georgia native Erica Malagon to a group that's so deep Georgia might have to dig the pool floor down to 12'.

A rival coach’s perspective: “They've got super talent coming in. Combined with the strong class from last year they should make huge strides at the NCAA level.”
