.: Ranking the Classes: #10 - North Carolina

May 20th, 2008

#10 North Carolina

The Tarheel staff was busy this fall, signing a dozen women.  Rich DeSelm says the class, “Is deep and talented and will have an immediate impact upon our conference and national competitiveness.”
More immediately, the class fills holes in breaststroke and sprint events.

Katherine Keel and Layne Brodie come in as the 5th and 6th fastest breaststrokers in the country with the versatile Laura Moriarty also ranked in the top ten.  The Tarheel sprint group – with five sub-24’s coming on board-gets a significant upgrade.  That’s as many as UNC had all last season.  Katelyn Martin is the fifth-fastest miler in the nation while Candace Cooper is top ten in the 200 backstroke.

An opposing coach's View: “They helped themselves in every single area.  They’re awfully young which might hurt, but this class will look better over time.”
