Friday Prelims
... Dana Kirk....
200 MR-
Arizona has taken all the relays in record setting fashion so far and the 200 MR looks no different. Seeded first by almost a second, the only question is by how much will the Cats break the American Record.
With six teams under the pool record, the event was fast.
Who's up...
# 12 Georgia and #11 Indiana both have big swims, moving from the bottom eight into the top eight. These are crucial points for both teams as they attempt to climb back into the top ten.
#18 Arizona State and #17 SMU move from unseeded position into the bottom eight.
Whos' down...
#7 Tennessee and #20 UCSB move out of the top eight into the bottom eight. As neither #8 Texas nor #9 Michigan qualified for tonight, Tennessee's 7th place position shouldn't take to hard of a hit.
#10 Kentucky and Michigan both fall out of the bottom eight, which paired with Indiana and Georgia qualifying for the big finals may bump both teams out of the top ten.
400 IM-
The defending champion Ohlgren took the 200 IM and was just .03 off the NCAA record. This year she looks to have her hands full with World Champion Team member Arianna Kukors, the top seed at 4:04.68. You're going to need a record to take this event and with the strength of the field and the pace of the meet so far, I wouldn't be shocked if we saw our first sub 4 minute swim in the event.
With three very easy swims Ohlgren, Kukors, and #1 seed Julia Smit all looked like they could drop a lot of time tonight. Each approached it the same way, building through their 100s and finished strong. This should be one of the best races of the evening. It took a 4:13.51 to make it back and a 4:11.02 to make it back top 8. A&M had the best overall performances with both their swimmers moving up and giving them some cushioning between themselves and Cal.
Who's Up...
Michigan's Brunemann came up big moving from unseeded to 6th, while Proud (UF) and Hain (A&M) both moved from the bottom eight to the top eight. Alabama's Degiovanni and A&M's Stratton both move into the bottom eight.
Who's Down...
Michigan's Mueller will not score, nor will Skelos (Penn St) or Ridgeway (Cal). Penn State also drops O'Brien from the top eight into the bottom eight, along with Minnesota's Shaughnessy.
100 Fly-
California has four swimmers seeded to score and with studs like Dana Vollmer and Emily Silver in the mix, this could be a place for Cal to shoot ahead of both Stanford and Texas A&M. Christine Magnuson of Tennessee is the top seed and is coming off of a good swim out of the 'B' finals. Arizona only has 2 seeded to score, but has 2 just outside of the top 16, look for them to move up also.
Tennessee's Magnuson was entered at a 51.00 and went a 50.99 to qualify first, it may have only been .01 of a second drop, but breaking 51 is a legend making swim, the fourth fastest swim in NCAA history. It took a 53.31 to make it back and a 52.73 to come back top 8. Cal scores big here qualifying five to swim again tonight, while Zona gets two in the top eight and Auburn brings back none.
Who' Up...
University of Washington's Campbell makes the biggest jump, from unseeded to eighth, while Cal' Thomas and Florida State's Sparg move into the bottom eight. Arizona gets another player into the top eight as Agy moves from 12th to 7th.
Who's Down...
Michigan's Kelly and Cal's Silver fall from the top eight to the bottom eight, while Goetsch (USC), McCawley (AU), and Werth (SMU) drop out of scoring position.
200 Free
Auburn has 2 in the top 8, including top seed Emily Kukors, and Maggie Bird, last night's runner up in the 500, just out side at 17th. No one should count out second seed Burckle, who was a 1:47.0 to the feet in the 500. Texas A&M has three, while Cal and Stanford each have no seeded entries, this could be a place for A&M to surge ahead of Stanford and make up some of the points Cal gained in the fly.
Texas A&M is making a statement today as everyone of their swimmers is moving up and scoring for the team. With four swims tonight, two in the top eight. Zona brings back three, while Auburn brings back 1.
Who's Up...
Georgia is having a big day, adding to that is Scroggy who moves from unseeded to 8th, while Nymeyer (Arizona), Marshall (A&M), and Wilkinson (A&M) all move into the top eight. Heiss (A&M), Vorster (Arizona), Baughman (Arizona), and Hansen (A&M) all move into the bottom eight.
Who's Down...
Auburn's Geary drops out of scoring position as do Riggins(ND), Jasmer (Washington), Nelson (Penn St), and Beckberger (ASU). Clemson's Parkhurst and and SMU's J. Blackman drop to the bottom eight.
100 Breast-
Top seed Rebecca Soni is seeded almost one and a half seconds faster than her nearest competitor and splits a 58.18 on last night's medley relay, the fastest breaststroke split of the night, but Arizona's Annie Chandler was only. 14 off of Soni's split. Stanford may use this event to counter the points lost to Cal in the fly and A&M in the 200 free, with three possible scorers.
Soni rocked the prelims and reaffirms that she is the clear favorite in this event. Arizona brings back 3, Auburn gets 2, as does Stanford.
Who's Up...
Virginia Tech's Botzum, Stanford's Smith, and UCLA's Teo all move from the bottom eight to the top eight. While Arizona's Craft along with Longacre (Rut), Roberts (AU), ad Saffer (Tenn) all move into the bottom eight.
Who's Down...
Denby (AU), McNichols (UGA), and Bruce (Stanford) all fall from the top eight to the bottom eight. Freeman (UCSB), Haase (UGA), Kraemer (Stanford), and Patterson (Washington) all fall out of scoring position.
100 Back-
Florida's Spofforth is a stud and has been described as one coach, not her own, as one of the toughest swimmers he has ever seen, she should be solid. Arizona goes in with 3 swimmers in seeded to score and another seeded at 17th, but Auburn also has three seeded to score.
Auburn and Zona each move one into qualifying while Zona also moves a girl up from the bottom eight, Auburn drops one from the top eight.
Who's Up...
Indiana's Bard and Arizona's Agy move from the bottom eight to the top eight. While Mclane (AU), Boritzke (Arizona), and Christensen (Virginia) all move into the bottom eight.
Who's Down...
Auburn's McCawley drops to the bottom eight while USC's Lahey drops out of scoring position, as do Parkhurst (Clemson) and O'Donnell-McCarthy (Stanford).
The up and down count...
Arizona- 9 up/5 down
Auburn- 3 up/5 down
A&M- 6 up/2 down
Cal- 4 up/4 down
Stanford- 5 up/1 down
Florida- 4 up/1 down
