Stevens Adds Thornton As Assistant

Hoboken, NJ , July 1st, 2008
On Tuesday morning, Stevens Institute of Technology Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach Trevor Miele announced the hiring of 2008 New York NYU graduate Brad Thornton as his full-time assistant coach. Thornton, who was a six-time NCAA Division III All-American and nine-time All-America honorable mention, will look to help Miele elevate the Ducks to elite status in the region and nationally.

“I am extremely excited to have Brad join my staff, and I feel that he will be able to help Stevens swimming develop into an elite swimming program,” said Miele, who recruited and later coached Thornton for two years at NYU before taking over at Stevens in 2006. “Brad’s work ethic combined with his knowledge of the sport will make him an outstanding coach. He was one of the most talented all-around swimmers in the nation, and his experience competing on the national level will be instrumental in the development of our program.”

Miele went on to say that, “I believe Brad will bring a lot of energy to the staff and help us continue to recruit national-level swimmers at Stevens.”

In addition to reaching All-America status 15 times at NYU, Thornton won six Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and six University Athletic Association championships. The UAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year in 2004-05, Thornton broke NYU records in 11 different events and currently holds nine school-best times. He was team captain in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Thornton excelled academically as well for the Violets. In 2007 and 2008, he was a first-team Academic all-district selection by the College Sports Information Directors of American and ESPN The Magazine in the College Division for District I. A Dean’s List member five times at NYU, Thornton also received the American Red Cross Youth Citizenship Award in 2004.

Since February, Thornton has worked as an account coordinator for Acronym Media, LLC in New York. From December 2006 through February 2008, he served as a web marketing intern for the International Fight League. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Thornton was a race productions intern for Korff Enterprises. He also worked in the sports information office at NYU as a student assistant for four months in 2005.

Thornton graduated from NYU in January with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management. He will be involved in all facets of the Ducks’ swimming program ranging from practice planning to recruitment, skill development, and other administrative duties.

In 2007-08, the Stevens men’s and women’s swimming teams combined to go 11-1 in dual meets. The women finished fourth at the Empire 8 Championships while the men placed fifth. Along the way, freshman Evan Wilson qualified for the NCAA Championships in three different events and became an honorable mention All-American in the 400-yard individual medley with a 14th-place national finish
