Navy Men Hire Maiello

Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts announced today the hiring of Chris Maiello as the program's new assistant coach.

"Chris comes to Navy with a positive progression within the coaching profession," said Roberts.  "He will do a terrific job in working with the midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy, as well as the rest of the USNA community."

Maiello arrives in Annapolis after having served as the head coach of the men's and women's teams at Darton College (Albany, Ga.) for the past two seasons.  His Darton swimmers combined to set 36 school records and, while swimming against four-year schools, compiled a 10-9 regular season record during his stint at the junior college.

He inherited a Darton program that saw its men's team place 12th and its women's program place 15th at the 2006 NJCAA National Championship the year prior to his arrival.  His initial season saw the men place ninth and the women seventh at the event, with both programs recording third-place showings at the 2008 championship.

Prior to accepting the position at Darton, Maiello was part of the coaching staff at Rochester for a little more than one year.  He served as an assistant coach at the school for one season and as the interim head coach of the program for six months.  The Rochester women's team placed second at the 2006 Liberty League Conference Championship, while the men's program placed third at the meet.

Maiello himself earned NCAA Division III All-America accolades in the 100 and 200 freestyle events (2002 and '01, respectively) as a swimmer at Hartwick.  After graduating from the school in 2002 with a trio of Hartwick records (100, 200, 500 freestyle), he began serving as the head coach at Amsterdam High School (Amsterdam, N.Y.) later that summer.  He remained at the school until the summer of 2005 when he entered the collegiate ranks at Rochester.
