Florida State opened its 2008 season with a splash, as divers Scott Derner and Katie Sirounis have swept Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week honors. The duo, who is the new year’s first recipients for the league weekly awards, each collected a pair of individual wins against UNC Wilmington and North Florida last Saturday.
A junior from Grapevine, Texas, Derner turned in a career-best performance en route to winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events as the 23rd-ranked Seminoles defeated UNC Wilmington, 130-104. He collected 336 points in the 1-meter dive and tallied 372.75 in the 3-meter. Both scores were also NCAA zone qualifying marks and currently rank fifth (3m) and eighth (1m) in the ACC.
Sirounis, who hails from Indian Harber Beach, Fla., registered two victories in No. 20 Florida State’s dominance over UNC Wilmington, 144-87, and North Florida, 146-84. The freshman diver took first place in the 1-meter with 253.10 points, and posted an NCAA zone qualifying mark (271.55) in the 3-meter to make it a sweep.
