Hopkins Takes Wash & Lee in Showdown of Top D-3 Sprinters

The third-ranked Johns Hopkins men notched a 153-109 win over #8 Washington & Lee in a match-up of top-ten Division III programs. On the women's side, #7 Hopkins earned a 151-105 victory over the Generals. The Blue Jay men have now won seven straight meets to improve to 7-2 on the season.The meet showcased a matchup between two of Division III's top sprinters - Brad Test and Alex Sweet.  

The Generals suffer their first loss of the season and are now 9-1 overall. The JHU women are now 6-3 on the season, while the Generals fall to 8-5 overall

Senior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School), junior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) and sophomore John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) each won two events to lead the way for the Blue Jays. Fedderly won both the 100 Breast (58.25) and the 200 Breast (2:12.20). Fedderly's wins set up sweeps of the top-three spots in both the 100 and 200 Breast. Freshman Brian Keeley (Rockford, MI/Rockford) took second in the 100 Breast while junior John Kegelman (Yorktown, PA/Tabb) took second in the 200 Breast. Sophomore Frank Long (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) claimed third in both events.

JHU opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, as the team of Thomas, Fedderly, sophomores Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) swam to a first place finish with a time of 1:35.38. Kleinguetl followed with a win in the 1650 Free with a time of 16:40.68, his fastest time of the season. He also picked up a win in the 200 Fly (1:57.21). Thomas claimed wins in both the 100 Back (50.98) and the 200 Back (1:56.33).

Senior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy) swam to a first place finish in the 200 Free with a career-best time of 1:43.14. Moisiades added an individual win to his relay win, by claiming first in the 100 Fly with a time of 52.86. Junior Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) finished in a close second at 52.91. Mahoney also took home an individual win, winning the 200 IM in 1:57.27.

Junior Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge), sophomore Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) and freshman Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) each picked up two wins to lead the way for the Blue Jays. JHU opened with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, as senior Erica Pakkala (Lititz, PA/Warwick), Dennis, sophomore Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) and junior Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies) swam a time of 1:55.31. Palopoli then won the 1650 Free with a time of 18:18.24, followed by Qu in second (18:31.60).

Zepp and MaryClaire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) finished one-two in the 200 Free with times of 2:00.05 and 2:01.04. Pakkala then claimed first in the 100 Back, finishing in 1:01.43. Dennis picked up her first win in the 100 Breast (1:11.17), followed by a win in the 200 Fly for Palopoli (2:12.55).

The wins continued as Rooney won the 50 Free with a time of 25.67 and junior Kate Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) won the 100 Free in 55.53. Dennis claimed her second win in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:29.86. While Zepp won the 500 Free in 5:23.02. Junior Val Neff-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) closed out the wins with a first place finish in the 100 Fly with a career-best time of 1:02.54. The Blue Jays swam exhibitions in the remainder of the meet.

Hopkins returns to the pool on February 2 with a tri-meet at the University of North Carolina. The Blue Jays will square off against the #15 Tar Heels and the #4 Eagles beginning at 10:00 am at Koury Natatorium.
