Los Angeles, CA , January 25th, 2008

Meet Results

Behind two school records and three other school all-time top-10 performances, the University of Washington men and women swept USC on Friday afternoon in a Pac-10 swimming dual meet.

Calling it his biggest dual meet win during his two years in Seattle, Huskies head coach Whitney Hite praised the efforts of his swimmers in picking up the school's first win over the Trojans in more than a decade.

"It is easily the biggest dual meet win in my time at Washington," said Hite. "Top to bottom we swam very well. We have been waiting to take a big step forward and today we took that step."

The rain that has drenched Southern California this week took a well-timed break, but the meet was still raced in damp, low 50s weather.  UW Freshman sensation Ariana Kukors, who trains locally with the King Aquatic Club, set her sixth school record after winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:59.95, which was also an NCAA "B" qualifying time.

Kukors picked up two more wins for the Huskies, winning the 200 individual medley in an NCAA "A" time of 1:59.70, and the 200 backstroke in an NCAA "B" time of 1:59.60.

Junior transfer Genevieve Patterson also set a new UW record, taking second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.25. Patterson also had a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, swimming the fifth-fastest time in UW history (2:16.07).

On the men's side, junior transfer Evan Bernier won the 100 freestyle in a time of 44.97, which is the fifth-fastest in Husky swimming history, while also winning the 200 freestyle in a UW season-best time of 1:39.50.

Russ Mahan and Andre Blyth also cracked the UW Men's Career Top-10 list on the day. Mahan won the 100 breaststroke in an NCAA "B" time of 54.98, good for No. 3 all-time, while Blyth swam the fifth-fastest time in school history in winning the 200 butterfly (1:48.20). Blyth earlier took second in the 200 butterfly (49.79). USC senior Whitney Hentzen and juniors Rachael Waller and Rebecca Soni each won a pair of races to lead the Women of Troy. Waller touched first in the 100y (51.15) and 200y free (1:50.12) while Soni provided her usual sweep in the breaststroke events, gliding to wins in the 100y (1:01.97) and 200y breast (2:14.09).

Hentzen won the distance events, reaching the wall first in the 500y (4:52.60) and 1000y free (9:58.55), the latter a season-best effort.

On the men’s side, Jake Grosser took first in the 50y free (20.58), senior Bryce Elser won the 100y fly (49.89) and junior Vanni Mangoni won the 200y IM (1:51.39).

Freshman Dillon Connolly was second in both the 200y IM (1:51.39) and the 1000y free (9:27.33) while junior Ankur Poseria was third in the 100y fly (49.89).

On the women's side, Erin Campbell was a double-winner for the Huskies, winning the 100 backstroke (55.85) and 100 butterfly (54.43). Both of her times were NCAA "B" qualifying times.

Lindsey Sharp added a win in the 50 freestyle (24.16) and a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.70), and Kim Jasmer had second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:51.67) and 500 freestyle (4:54.66).
