.: Oberlin Closes Duals With New Win Record
Oberlin, OH , January 25th, 2008
The Yeowomen posted a 6-3 dual-meet record this season – marking their most wins since 1983 (6-6) and earning their first winning season since 1989 (5-4).
Jenny Meltz, a first-year student from Andover, Mass., highlighted the meet by shattering her own school record in the women’s 1,000- yard free by nearly 14 seconds as she clocked in at 10:37.85 – besting her old mark of 10:51.57 that she set last week against John Carroll (Jan. 19). Meltz also added a victory in the 500-yard free – tapping the wall in 5:26.82.
Sara Kadi, a first-year standout from Piedmont, Calif., also set a new school record in the 400-yard IM with a mark 4:40.66 – topping teammate Kiri Ulmschneider's old time of 4:44.36. Kadi also checked in at 2:15.58 to win the 200-yard butterfly and also won the 100-yard fly in 1:01.53.
“All in all it was a great last meet,” head coach Mark Fino said. “Sara and Jenny have been great all year and put together two fantastic swims. That was such a great way to honor the seniors, and hopefully is a prelude of what we will see at the conference championship meet.”
On a night when the senior class was honored before the meet, Yeomen veteran diver Corey Myers tallied a season-best 296.40 points in 3- meter diving to qualify for the NCAA Division III national meet. He also completed the diving sweep with a victory off of the 1-meter board with 274.65 points
On the women’s side, Shannon Gallagher touched the wall in 2:03.99 in the 200-yard free to earn the top spot, while teammate Bryne Ulmschneider followed in second at 2:05.15. Gallagher, a sophomore from Mystic, Conn., returned after the first diving break by clocking in at 56.77 in the 100-yard free to win her second event of the night.
The tandem of Laura Fries, (Bryne) Ulmschneider, Kadi and Ploy Keener got the winning started in the first event of the night with a mark of 1:59.02 in the 200-yard medley relay. Like Kadi, Fries and Ulmschneider each returned to earn individual victories before the night was over.
Fries put together a pair of strong swims in the 100-yard back (1:03.03) and 200-yard back (2:15.38) to earn two victories.
Ulmschneider checked in at 2:38.26 in the 200-yard breast to earn nine points for the Yeowomen. Senior Lydia Moore also set a new personal-best mark of 3:00.77 in the women’s 200-yard breast.
First-year Christine Martin contributed a victory in 3-meter diving with 198 points.
The Yeowomen ended the night the way they started it – with a victory in a relay event. This time the grouping of Gallagher, Jordan Jancosek, Keener and (Bryne) Ulmschneider completed the 200-yard free in 1:47.14 – the second-best team time of the season.
The men fell to the Bishops 151-124 but did have some strong individual performances on the night.
In the final home meet of his career, senior John Hugens shined is his first event of the night by winning the 1,000-yard free with a season-best time of 11:08.27. He later returned to win the 100-yard back with a time of 59.14.
First-year Jon Vimr posted a mark of 1:48.99 to win the 200-yard free and later returned to win the 200-yard back in 2:04.70.
Junior Scott McInerney took the men into the first diving break with a victory in the 200-yard fly – clocking in at 2:07.91.
Holm, Corey Spiro, Vimr and McInerney teamed up to record a new season-best time of 1:32.99 to win the 200-yard free relay.
