.: Iowa Women 179, Illinois 120

Iowa City , January 20th, 2008

The University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team played host to Illinois today in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes picked up their second win in as many days and beat the Illini, who came in with wins in the previous four meetings.

"Illinois always swims well on the road, but it is a satisfying win and I am proud of the way we raced today," said head coach Marc Long.

Iowa got off to a quick start and ended up taking first place in 13 of the 16 events to improve their record to 4-5 (2-2 Big Ten).

"It's always good to get a conference victory and it makes me excited for the championship meets we have coming up next month," said Long.

Six swimmers helped Iowa in winning nine of the 12 individual events led by sophomore Christine Kuczek in the 100 (51.80) and 200 freestyle (1:51.74). Also getting two victories apiece was sophomore Laura Mozdzen in the 100 (58.29) and 200 butterfly (2:06.03), and junior Ashley Dell in the 500 (5:03.49) and 1,000 freestyle (10:18.47). Sophomore diver Deidre Freeman swept the diving events with scores of 277.05 and 287.70 in the one meter and three meter competitions, respectively.

The Hawkeyes will return to action on January 26 when they head to Columbia, MO. The women will compete in a double dual against Missouri and Kansas while the men will just swim against Missouri.
