.: Army Sweeps Lehigh On Senior Day

West Point, NY , January 20th, 2008

Army senior Greg Sievers broke the Academy records on 1-meter and 3-meter diving, while sophomore Lindsey Adao set a new 1-meter mark to lead the Black Knights to a sweep of Patriot League rival Lehigh this afternoon on Senior Day at Crandall Pool. The Army men picked up a 176-110 win, while the women were victorious, 170-126. The team’s 14 seniors were honored in a ceremony before the meet.

Sievers totaled a 335.70 to shatter the old 1-meter record (326.17) set by Doug Klein in 2004, before also surpassing Klein’s 3-meter mark (360.00) with a 361.12 to sweep both events.

Adao’s 298.57 1-meter score broke the 296.93 posted by Chelsea Haviland in 2006. Adao also was credited with a personal best 305.40 on the 3-meter board to take top honors in both events.

“I’m very excited for our divers. They have the ability to do some very special things this year,” said diving coach Ron Kontura. “However, we still have a long season to go. It is a great and historic day for our diving program in many ways but there is so much more we can accomplish. We can be proud of what we did today and realize that this is only a taste of what we can accomplish as a team this year.”

In the swimming events, freshman Corri Payne won three events for the second day in a row, touching first in the 1,000 free (10:39.76), 200 free (1:56.71) and 500 free (5:13.37), while senior captain Cora Freeman was also a triple-winner with the day’s fastest times in the 100 back (1:00.93), 50 free (24.79) and 100 fly (59.86).

Senior captain Kim DeFiori clocked the fastest time in the 200 back (2:10.37), while senior Chelsey Freeman finished first in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:12.26. The duo also teamed with senior Sylvia Beck and junior Blair Miller to finish first in the 400 medley relay (4:02.89).

Freshman Cortney Heaps was the day’s winner in the 100 free (55.16), while junior Erin Hanley was first in the 200 breast (2:33.57).

“I am so proud of our senior class. For our women, after losing at Lehigh last season in a meet that came down to the last relay, to really have a dominating performance today was a fitting way for the seniors to finish their careers here at Crandall Pool. They have really helped create a culture and an environment that is going to lay a good foundation for future years. For our men, they are really starting to compete with a sense of urgency and are doing a better job across the board to compete more consistently.”

Senior Jake Mentele cruised to victory in the 100 breast (57.11) and the 100 fly (52.40), while senior Quentin Walsh was also a double-winner with the top times in the 100 back (55.02) and 200 back (1:57.83). The pair also joined sophomore Chuck Ciliske and freshman Stewart Glenister to put together a winning 400 medley relay that touched the wall in 3:33.88.

Other highlights on the men’s side included sophomore James McLaughlin winning the 200 breast (2:10.07) before finishing behind Mentele in the 100 breast with a time of 59.95. Sophomore Kyle Newman also posted a winning time in the 500 free (4:44.52), while Ciliske notched three second-place efforts in the 200 free (1:44.49), 100 free (47.84) and 500 free (4:49.32).

“I get choked up when I think about everything our seniors have done for this team, what they have been through here at West Point, the things they are going to do for this country and the loyalty that they have shown me and this program. It is very emotional day,” continued Wender.
