Women
Colgate University won 10 individual events and both relays as the women's swimming and diving team defeated Cornell, 181-117, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Lineberry Natatorium.
Colgate began the meet by taking the top two places in the 200 medley relay. The Raiders' top foursome of junior Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.), senior Kacy Reams (Evanston, Ill.), sophomore Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.), and junior Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) finished in 1:49.58, just 0.44 seconds ahead of their teammates, freshman Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.), junior Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.), freshman Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), and senior Magdalena Mango (New York, N.Y.).
In the 400 free relay, Guyett, freshman Emily Kelly (Potomac, Md.), Mango, and junior Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) edged the top quartet from Cornell with a winning time of 3:38.14.
Sophomore Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) won the 100 breast in 1:08.90. Mango was just 0.21 seconds behind her in second place, and sophomore Alaina Sullivan (Shaker Heights, Ohio) was third with a time of 1:09.94.
The Raiders swept the top four positions in the 200 breast. Sullivan won the event in 2:27.95, and Curran was right behind her, finishing in 2:29.28. Reams was just 0.02 seconds off of Curran's pace to claim third, and Emily Murphy was fourth in 2:30.33.
Bottger was victorious in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:56.55. Marchi was right behind her in second with a time of 1:57.08. Bottger and Marchi also finished one-two in the 100 free: Bottger's winning time was 52.72, and Marchi posted a time of 54.46.
Marchi earned her first win of the season in the 500 free (5:17.84) after participating in an off-campus study group in the fall. Botter was second, touching the wall in 5:20.50.
Colgate also earned the top two spots in the 200 fly. McGraw won the event in 2:09.11, and Guyett was second, finishing in 2:10.26. McGraw also won the 100 fly in 58.59, and Guyett finished third in 59.92. Mango took fourth, posting a time of 1:00.93. McGraw also won the 200 IM, finishing in 2:11.43. Reams was third, recording a time of 2:16.54.
Emily Murphy won the 50 free in 24.52, and Walker was third, finishing in 25.40. Kelly won the 1000 free in 10:55.21 for her first career victory in the event.
Senior Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) came in third in the 100 back, finishing in 1:01.87. She was also third in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:15.33.
In just her second collegiate appearance, freshman diver Becky Fisher (Cooperstown, N.Y.) finished third in both the one- and three-meter events with personal-best point totals. On the three-meter board, he career-best score of 216.67 was less than four points behind the winner.
The Raiders will make the short trip down Route 12 next weekend for a dual meet at Binghamton. The competition begins at 1:00 p.m.
Men
In a hard-fought swimming dual meet, the Cornell men defeated local rival Colgate, 156-123, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Raiders' Lineberry Natatorium.
Junior George Bennitt (West Chester, Pa.) led the Raiders with a win in the 50 free, turning in a time of 22.04. Junior Dan Lathrop (Westerly, R.I.) was third in the event in 22.92, and senior Jeff Jakob (Medford, N.J.) was third, posting a time of 23.19.
Colgate's top 200 medley relay of freshmen Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Tyler Coolman (Fort Collins, Colo.), senior Zach Whitman (Pittsford, N.Y.), and Bennitt finished second, just 0.33 seconds behind the winning quartet from Cornell.
Gniewek was the runner-up in the 100 back, finishing in 54.45. Sophomore Cameron Voell (Little Silver, N.J.) came in fourth in the event with a time of 57.15. Voell came in second in the 100 free, posting a time of 49.50. Jakob claimed fourth place and a time of 50.22.
Whitman won the 100 fly with a time of 51.70. He finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.83. Freshman Trevor Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) was fourth, completing the race in 2:01.55.
Trevor Healy was also second in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:00.29, and classmate Peter Coulson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came in third in 2:02.77.
Freshmen Trevor and Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 400 IM with times of 4:16.74 and 4:18.86.
Devon Healy was second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.36, and Coolman finished fourth in 2:24.84. Coolman was third in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:03.43. Coulson finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.11, while Bennitt came in fifth in 1:50.01.
Freshman Vince Hostoffer (Highland Heights, Ohio) earned first-place points in the 500 free with the event's third-best time of 4:58.87. Devon Healy earned top points in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:00.59. Whitman was right behind him with a time of 2:00.62.
The Raiders' top foursome in the 400 free posted the third-best time of the afternoon, 3:13.26, to earn first-place points.
