ACC Performers of the Week

MEN:  Joe Kinderwater, Freshman, North Carolina

WOMEN:  Alison Clemens, Sophomore, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Joe Kinderwater and Alison Clemens have been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, making it the second week in a row a school claimed both weekly awards.

The league honor is a first for both student-athletes this season.

Kinderwater, a freshman from Lancaster, Pa., became the second-fastest 1000-yard freestyle performer in Tar Heel swimming history as No. 15 North Carolina claimed a 168-132 conference victory over Clemson last Saturday. The distance swimmer was no match in the 1000-yard freestyle as he touched in with a league-leading time of 9:07.17 to finish 3.92 seconds ahead of any other competitor in the race. Kinderwater also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.88.

Clemens took first place in three individual events and swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay, as the 10th-ranked Tar Heels defeated Clemson 204-96 and Rutgers 173-131 over the weekend. The sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., posted the fastest marks in her events this week, winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.74), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.16) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.99). Her time in the 200 breast was also an NCAA “B” cut.
