No. 2 Georgia knocks off No. 16 Texas Women's Swimming & Diving, 175-119

Austin, TX , January 12th, 2008

Junior diver Kathryn Kelly and junior swimmer Hee-Jin Chang posted two wins apiece, but 16th-ranked Texas fell shy of No. 2 Georgia, as the Bulldogs posted a 175-119 win over the Longhorns Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Texas opened the meet with another solid swim from sophomore Susana Escobar (Queretaro, Mexico), as she took second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:29.87, good for a NCAA "B" cut, though she has automatically qualified for participation in the event at the NCAA Championship. Freshman Natalie Sacco (Dallas, Texas) took third in 16:49.53.

Chang (Seoul, Korea) posted a decisive win in the 50 freestyle, taking the event in 23.27. Freshman Brie Powers (Kalamazoo, Mich.) added a fourth-place finish in 23.86. Kelly (Longwood, Fla.) notched the first of two wins in the one-meter event, where she won decisively with a score of 318.23. Chang took her second consecutive swim event with a top time of 50.35 in the 100 freestyle after the one-meter diving session.

Junior Alison Soelter (Ulysses, Kan.) added a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the 200 breaststroke, as she took second in 2:17.13. Escobar scored another solid swim in the 500 freestyle, taking third in a NCAA "B" cut time of 4:50.44.

Junior Jacqueline Martin-Lacey (Franklin, Tenn.) took the 100 butterfly in 56.66, and Kelly registered her second win in the three-meter event with a total of 339.15.

"Kat nearly had a career day on the three meter, and her one meter was the best performance of her career at Texas," said UT diving coach Matt Scoggin. "She is becoming more and more confident, and it's a good time of the season to have this kind of confidence. Kayla Torske had her best three meter performance as a Longhorn, and she was having one of her better one meter contests until her last round. She continues to get better." Soelter took the 200 IM in 2:04.02, and the Longhorns wrapped up the meet with a second-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.48.
