.: Mary Washington Sweeps St. Mary's College of Maryland

St. Mary’s City, MD , January 12th, 2008

Both of St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s swim teams suffered setbacks Saturday afternoon at the hands of the University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference meet.  The Seahawk women (3-3, 1-2 CAC) dropped a 124-73 decision to No. 15 Mary Washington (5-1, 4-0 CAC), while the men (1-4, 0-3 CAC) fell 125-66 to the Eagles (4-2, 4-0 CAC).
 
The Seahawks return to action next Saturday when St. Mary’s hosts Salisbury University in its final regular-season meet of the 2007-08 season.

Women’s Highlights
Junior Eleanor Koerner (North Potomac, Md./T.S. Wootton) captured the 100 free with her winning time of 56.00.  Freshman Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) placed first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:36.86.
 
St. Mary’s also won the 400 free relay in 4:03.13 behind the efforts of freshmen Arielle Webster (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and Erin Cammarata (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep), junior Nat Schaefer (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), and senior co-captain Caitlin Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair).
 
The Seahawks finished second in 400 medley relay with a time of 4:09.85.  Swimming the relay for SMCM were junior co-captain Brie McDowell (Doylestown, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Sokolove, sophomore Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis), and Koerner.
 
Schaefer took third in the 1000 free with her time of 11:51.24.  Koerner was second in the 200 free in 2:06.39.  Hotchko placed second in the 50 free with a time of 25.99.  McDowell finished second in the 400 IM with her mark of 4:51.20.
 
Hotchko was third in the 200 fly in 2:17.00.  McDowell came in second in the 200 back with a time of 2:16.75.  Schaefer took third in the 500 free with her time of 5:40.13.  
 
Sophomore Laura VanBlargan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) was second behind Sokolove in the 200 breast with a time of 2:51.50.
 
Men’s Highlights
Junior Michael Preston (Pasadena, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) won the 500 free with his first-place time of 5:05.21.  Freshman Nico Pinto (Lima Peru) took first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:33.55.
 
The foursome of juniors Bobby Wiley (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), Chris Cammarata (Towson, Md./Loyola), and Ben Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga College) and senior Mike Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) captured the 400 free relay in 3:46.14.
 
St. Mary’s finished third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:53.81 as freshmen Gabe Grace (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) and Aaron Page (Keene, N.H./Keene), sophomore Cam Buckingham (Silver Spring, Md./Blake), and Preston swam on the relay.
 
Junior Joey Quase (Montgomery Village, Md./Good Counsel) was second in the 1000 free with his time of 11:10.24.  Preston was second in the 200 free in 1:52.04 followed by Buckingham in third with a time of 1:54.45.  Quase took third in the 400 IM with his mark of 4:54.91.
 
Kerr came in third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:18.72.  Jaskiewicz was third in the 100 free in 53.35.  Grace placed third in the 200 back in 2:10.82.  Sophomore JP Spencer (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) finished second behind Pinto in the 200 breast with a time of 2:57.96.
