.: Colgate Splits With Bucknell

HAMILTON, NY , January 12th, 2008

Six members of the Orange and Blue posted individual wins, but it was not enough to help the Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team to victory as the squad suffered a 174-124 setback to Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The loss leaves the Bison at 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League, while the Raiders improve to 4-3, 2-1 against league opponents.
 
Bucknell saw its best success of the day come in the 200-yard backstroke as sophomore Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) led a Bison trio that went one-two-three in the event. Atkinson reached the wall in two minutes, 10.73 seconds, followed by freshman Sinead O’Dwyer (Green River, Wyo./The Peddie School (N.J.)) with a time of 2:12.19 and sophomore Abigail Paules (York, Pa./Baltimore Lutheran) with a time of 2:12.48.
 
Sophomore Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) claimed first in the 100 back in 1:00.19, while Atkinson took third (1:02.08) and O’Dwyer fifth (1:03.17).
 
Freshmen Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) rounded out the individual winners for the Orange and Blue in the swimming events as Goebel recorded a first-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.90 and Keath was victorious in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:27.81.
 
Senior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) registered two runner-up finishes against Colgate, which came in the 1,000 free (10:43.24) and the 500 free (5:14.30). Sophomore Sarah Pease (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin Senior High) recorded a second-place showing as well, with her time of 2:11.50 in the 200 fly.
 
Two additional third-place finishes were posted by Bucknell in the individual swimming events as sophomore Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) was third in the 200 free (1:57.82) and Atkinson finished third with a time of 2:14.02 in the 200 IM.
 
The Bison swept the diving portion of the meet with sophomores Rebecca Bersani (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Allison FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal) collecting one win apiece. Bersani posted the highest three-meter score, 225.74, while FitzPatrick led the way with a mark of 230.40 in the one-meter competition.
 
In the relays, the 200 medley squad of Warren, junior Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), Goebel and Mongan placed second in 1:49.82, and the 200 free contingent of junior Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Skroski, Warren and junior Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) finished third with a time of 1:42.96.
 
Bucknell will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 18, with its 2007-08 home finale against Columbia slated to begin at 5 p.m.

The Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team swept the top-three spots in seven events, helping the squad cruise to a 192-96 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bison move to 4-1 on the season, 2-1 in the Patriot League, while Colgate drops to 0-6, 0-2 against league opponents.
 
Senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) was a double winner for the Orange and Blue, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.91 seconds and posting the fastest 100 free time, 48.09. Senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) followed Peterman as the runner-up in the 50 free, reaching the wall in 22.24, while in the 100 free, sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and Steadman took second (48.79) and third (48.92), respectively.
 
In the 200 free, Fletcher claimed first, reaching the wall in 1:46.71, while sophomore Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) was second (1:47.27) and Peterman third (1:47.30). Fletcher also clocked the fastest time in the 200 IM, an event the Bison exhibitioned, finishing in 1:59.31.
 
Sophomore Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) led the way in the 1,000 free with his first-place time of 9:55.40. His classmate David Iselin (Potomac, Md./Churchill) came in second (10:01.66) and senior Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Sr. High) took third (10:03.66).
 
The trio of senior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), senior Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.)) and sophomore Brett Carey (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) swept the top-three spots in both breaststroke events. Bennett won the 100 breast, reaching the wall in 58.51, followed by Metcalf (1:00.12) and Carey (1:01.05), while Metcalf claimed the fastest time in the 200 (2:10.81), with Carey in second (2:13.53) and Bennett in third (2:14.54).
 
Freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was victorious in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.81, while Iselin followed in second (1:56.41) and junior Chris Amato (East Norwich, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) came in third (2:02.55). DeLeon also scored in the 100 back (3rd, 54.14), an event won by junior Mark Kawczenski with a time of 52.86.
 
Two additional runner-up showings were recorded by members of the Orange and Blue in the individual swimming events. Trafton’s came in the 200 fly (2:00.43) and junior Patrick Stummer’s (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) came in the 500 free (4:56.31).
 
Junior Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) led the Bison divers, placing first on both the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 245.47 and 224.48, respectively.
 
In the 200 medley relay, Kawczenski, Bennett, Steadman and Fletcher teamed up to record the winning time of 1:35.60. Swimming exhibition in the 200 free relay, Steadman, Trafton, Kawczenski and Peterman posted the fastest time, 1:27.73.
