The Carleton College women’s swim team returned to competition with a
strong showing, taking first place at the SMU quadrangular. Kale
Zicafoose (Fy./Omaha, Neb./Westside) won two individual events and
also participated on a pair of victorious relays while Kate Alexander
(So./Tigard, Ore./Tualatin) out-swam the competition in three races
and a relay. Carleton finished the event with 1034.5 points.
Also competing in the event were Luther College (849.5), Augsburg
College (147) and host Saint Mary’s University (289).
The Knights opened the meet in fine fashion, winning the 200 medley
relay with a time of 1:53.76. Zicafoose led things off, followed by
Alexander, Kaarin Taylor (Jr./Gainesville, Fla.) and Jen Gratz
(Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Edina).
Zicafoose later added a five-second victory in the 100 backstroke. Her
margin of victory in the 200 yard backstroke was over nine seconds.
Alexander prevailed in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. In the
200-yard event, it was a 1-2-3 finish for the Knights as Jennie Miller
(Jr./Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Mia Zutz (So./Middleton, Wis.) followed
Alexander to the wall. Alexander’s day concluded with a victory in the
200-yard individual medley.
Carleton also took the top three spots in the 200 butterfly. Taylor
edged Anna Gallagher (Fy./Burlington, Vt.) by seven hundredths of a
second. Kelsey Inhinger (So./Eden Prairie, Minn.) was right on their
heels and placed third.
After anchoring the winning 200 medley relay, Gratz took top honors in
the 50 freestyle and finished second in the 100 freestyle.
The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team finished second
out of three teams at a meet hostd by Saint Mary’s University on
Saturday. Ted Marschall (Jr./Burnsville, Minn.) led the Knights with
first-place finishes in three events.
Luther College won the team competition with 1012 points. Carleton was
second at 858, and SMU totalled 343 points.
Marschall outperformed the compeition in the 100 and 200 breaststroke
and the 200 individual medley. His winning time of 2:06.65 in the 200
breaststroke was more than eight seconds faster than his nearest
competitor and his time time of the season. He also posted a season
best in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.71.
In addtion to Marschall’s victories, the Knights had second-place
finishes in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and
200 freestyle relay.
Andrew Mering (Fy./Baraboo, Wis.), Marschall, Elliot Bartis
(Jr./McLean, Va./Langley) and Jared Plotz (Jr./Hutchinson, Minn.)
finished less than six-tenths of a second behind the team from Luther
in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. After trailing after the opening
leg, Marschall gave Carleton the lead mid-way through the event.
Entering the freestyle leg the teams were nearly tied.
Mering also placed second in the 100 backstroke, third in the 200
backstroke and was a member of the second-place 200 freestyle relay.
Joining him on the final relay were Alan Goodyear (So./Cobham, United
Kingdom) David Nonberg (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Pacific Charter)
and Teddy Gelderman (Fy./Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View).
Ryan Terrien (Jr./Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) finished third in the
100 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke.
The Knights next competition will come when they host the Carleton
Mini Invite at 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The Knights concluded the meet the way they began, with a first-place
relay performance. Zicafoose, Louise Buckler (Fy./Blaine, Minn./St.
Paul Academy), Becky Alexander (Jr./Tigard Ore./Tualatin) and Karin
Brown (Sr./Madison, Wis./Memorial) edged the top group from Luther.
The Knights next meet will be the Carleton Mini Invite on Saturday,
Jan. 19. Races begin at 12 noon at Thorpe Pool.
