DALLAS - No. 1 Texas (8-1) tallied 10 individual victories - including two apiece from swimmers Sean Patton and Matt McGinnis and diver Jonathan Wilcox - and four NCAA provisional-qualifying marks in a 152-120 victory over No. 21 SMU Saturday afternoon at SMU's Perkins Natatorium.
Senior Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) logged the first win for Texas in the 100 backstroke, where he touched in 48.61 for a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. Patton (Charlotte, N.C.) claimed the 100 butterfly in a NCAA "B" cut time of 48.38, and sophomore Andrew Wang (Austin, Texas) took second in 49.12. Senior Chris Seitz (Taylor Mill, Ky.) completed the one-two-three Texas finish in 49.45.
Sophomore Dave Walters (Yorktown, Va.) registered an easy victory in the 1000 freestyle, taking first in 9:24.25, as sophomore Jim Robertson (Burnet, Texas) took second in 9:32.25. Freshman Bryan Collins (Mount Airy, Md.) took third in 9:42.28. Junior Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) took the 200 freestyle in 1:38.08, and freshman Matt Donch (Raleigh, N.C.) took second in 1:40.63.
McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) took top honors in the 200 IM with a NCAA "B" cut mark of 1:48.13, while senior Agustin Magruder (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) played second in 1:50.29. Wilcox (Bellevue, Wash.) recorded his first of two diving victories in the one-meter event with a score o 349.05. Sophomore Mike Wong (Cerritos, Calif.) took third in 327.22.
Freshman Brian Wilson (Short Hills, N.J.) led a one-two Texas finish in the 200 butterfly with a winning time of 1:51.23, and Donch took a close second in 1:51.34. Patton added his second win in the 200 backstroke, touching in a NCAA "B" cut mark of 1:46.58. Sophomore Alan Maher (Nashville, Tenn.) took third in 1:50.00.
McGinnis took the 500 freestyle in 4:28.05 and was followed in third by freshman Scott Jostes (Chesterfield, Mo.) in 4:34.94. Wilcox added his second win in the three-meter diving event with a top total of 361.27, though with the team victory well in hand, UT completed the event as an exhibition and did not take the points.
Texas will host the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 27-March 1 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
