.: Wolverines Sweep Quad Meet, Snap Buckeyes' Win Streak

Ann Arbor, Mich. , February 2nd, 2008

The No. 4 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won six of eight events Saturday (Feb. 2) and 12 of 16 over the two-day quad meet to defeat three Big Ten Conference opponents in Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines defeated No. 13 Ohio State (194-140) and scored sizable victories over No. 16 Penn State (245-87) and No. 18 Northwestern (235-99) to close out the Big Ten regular season with a perfect 8-0 record (10-1 overall).

Junior Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) headlined the final day for the Wolverines, posting an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 44.29 in the 100-yard freestyle, his second fastest time this season.

Savulich began day in the 200-yard medley relay with sophomores Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake), Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Alon Mandel (Netanya, Israel/Eldad). The quartet finished second (1:29.14), just 0.03 of a second short of an NCAA qualifying time.

Junior Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA 'B' time of 4:22.37, 0.29 behind the Buckeyes' George Markovic. The second-place finish tightened the score between Michigan and Ohio State as the Wolverines' lead was trimmed to 113-90 after the Buckeyes won the opening two events.

It appeared the tide was beginning to change, but the Wolverines regained momentum with a sweep in the 200-yard individual medley. Touching the wall first for Michigan was Schultz with an NCAA consideration time of 1:47.69. Senior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) finished second with a 'B' time of his own (1:48.38) and was followed by senior Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) in third (1:50.24) to complete the sweep.

The next two events were won by Wolverines as Brady posted an NCAA 'B' time 47.84 in the 100-yard butterfly and Mandel touched in 49.33 in the 100-yard backstroke to seal the victory over the Buckeyes and hand Ohio State its only loss of the season
