Despite the poor weather conditions that rearranged the Washington State swim team’s schedule, WSU competed against the University of Idaho Friday evening. The Cougars came away with a 113-53 victory during Senior Night.

“This was a great atmosphere for our seniors and juniors who were finishing up today,” said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. “We really respect and appreciate the Vandals for coming over and working with us to have this meet.”

Highlighting the competition for the Cougars were senior Bryn Mooney and freshman Sierra Burton. Mooney touched first in both the 200 butterfly (2:08.14) and the 200 IM (2:13.02) as well as starting off the second-place 400 medley B relay (3:58.81) with a 59.58 split.

Burton won the 50 freestyle (24.16) and the 100 freestyle (51.93). She also anchored the winning 400 medley A relay team (3:50.29) with a 51.33 split.

Other victories for WSU came in the 500 freestyle with sophomore Shawna Keller’s time of 5:07.53, the 200 breaststroke with junior Elyse Peterson’s touch of 2:20.52 and the 200 backstroke with junior Afton Pickett’s time of 2:06.32.

Anna Humphrey and Alyson O’Brien led the Vandals’ effort. Humphrey finished with a second-place showing and two third places while O’Brien wrapped up two second-place finishes and snagged a third-place finish as well.

“This meet really helped our team to get in some racing off the blocks,” said Quam. “It has helped out the members of our team who haven’t competed since winter training was completed.”
