Daytona State Adds Swimming, Names Lochte Coach

Daytona, FL , December 17th, 2008
A media event was held today on the Daytona State College campus to introduce Steve Lochte as the Head Coach of the Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving program for both men and women.  Steve Lochte was introduced by his son, Olympic medalist, Ryan Lochte.  Also in attendance was Rowdy Gaines, sports commentator and former Olympic swimmer and medalist.

Steve Lochte will bring a wealth of experience to the new Swimming and Diving program and plans to "generate a program that is a positive benefit to the student-athlete and the College by having the team excel academically and become National Championship contenders and champions as soon as possible!"

Daytona State College President D. Kent Sharples stated, "It kind of took a perfect storm to allow this to happen.  The College has a history and tradition of past excellence with the swimming program, and today we find ourselves in a community that is a growing and thriving competitive swimming area. Add to that the fact that Ryan Lochte (USA Olympic Gold Medalist) grew up in the local Daytona Swim program and was coached by his father Steve Lochte, Executive Director of Daytona Swim, you have the elements that only timing and opportunity can provide."
