American, World Record Breakers Highlight National Honors


Multiple records and NCAA "A" times for Stanford's Julia Smit and Texas' David Walters earned the East Coast natives the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week honors.  Janelle Slattery (Drury), Max Heinze, Hal Eubanks, Nelson Silva, Radu Badalac (Ouachita Baptist University), Olivia Zaleski (Denison), and Nelson Westby (St. Olaf College) also received the award.  The six were selected based on their performances November 24-December 7th by a panel of collegiate coaches.

Division I Women -
Smit Julia Smit, Stanford University
At the 2008 Canada Cup in Toronto, Canada Smit (Mt. Sinai, NY) had four wins.  The junior won the 400 meter individual medley (4:25.87 NCAA "A" time, World Record), the 200 meter individual medley (2:06.49, NCAA "A" time American Record), the 100 meter individual medley  (58.90) and the 200 meter freestyle (1:55.59, NCAA "A" time).  The All-American also assisted on the winning 400 meter freestyle relay (3:35.47, NCAA "A" time).



Walters Division I Men
David Walters, University of Texas
Walters (Yorktown, VA) had three wins to aid the Longhorns in victory at the Texas invitational.  The junior won the 200 freestyle (1:31.83, NCAA "A" time and American record), the 100 freestyle (42.13, NCAA "A" time), and the 50 freestyle (19.33, NCAA "A" time).  The Olympian also assisted on five winning relays; the 400 medley relay (3:09.10, NCAA "B" time), the 200 medley relay (1:25.56, NCAA "A" time), the 800 freestyle relay (6:20.96, NCAA "A" time), the 200 freestyle relay (1:17.20, NCAA "A" time), and the 400 freestyle relay (2:50.49, NCAA "A" time).


KieferDivision II Women
Janelle Slattery, Drury
Slattery (Waikerie, Australia/Adelaide) had two wins aiding her team in a third place finish at the Missouri Invitational.  The senior won the 100 Backstroke (55.02, NCAA "A" time) and  the 200 Backstroke (2:00.38, NCAA "A" time).  She swam to a second place finish in the 100 Butterfly (55.18, NCAA "A" time), and an eighth place finish in the 200 Butterfly (2:13.11 and 2:07.35 in preliminaries, NCAA "B" time).  Slattery also assisted on five relays; the third place 200 medley relay (1:44.35, NCAA "A" time), 200 freestyle relay (1:33.75, NCAA "A" time), 400 medley relay (3:49.85, NCAA "A" time), the fourth place 800 freestyle relay (7:38.69, NCAA "A" time), and seventh place 400 freestyle relay (3:36.26).
 
Division II Men
Max Heinze, Hal Eubanks, Nelson Silva, and Radu Badalac, Ouachita Baptist University
The Tigers  finished second at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock Christmas Invitational.  The 200 medley relay team of Max Heinze (Fr. Berlin, Germany), Hal Eubanks (Jr. Frisco, TX), Nelson Silva (Jr. Sau Paulo, Brazil), and Radu Badalac (Jr. Sibu, Romania) broke national record of 1:29.86 previously held by North Dakota. This is the first time a relay has been recognized as Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week.


Division III Women
Olivia Zaleski, Denison
Zaleski (Corry, PA) achieved three NCAA "A" times at the Miami Invitational.  The junior finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (55.55 NCAA-"A" Time), fifth in the 100 backstroke (57.15-NCAA "A" time), and tenth in the 50 freestyle (23.63 NCAA "A" time).  The All-American was also on three relays; the third place 200 freestyle relay (1:35.25), the fourth place 400 freestyle relay (3:51.14), and the second place 200 medley relay (1:48.57).
 
Division III Men
Nelson Westby, St. Olaf College
Westby (Salem, OR) had two wins at the TYR/Collegeswimming.com Classic; the 100 breaststroke (54.66, Meet/pool record, NCAA "A" time), and the 200 breaststroke (1:58.98, meet/pool record, NCAA "A" time). He narrowly missed the national records in both the 100 breaststroke(54.49) and the 200 breaststroke (1:58.90).  The senior also swam to a third place finish in the 50 freestyle (21.48).  Westby swam on two winning relays; the 400 freestyle relay (3:08.03), the 400 medley relay (3:24.63 meet and pool record), and the second place 200 medley relay (1:24.59).
