Marymount University Sweeps St. Mary's College

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland swim team kicked off the 2007-08 campaign with a loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Marymount (Va.) University, Saturday afternoon. The St. Mary’s men suffered a 129-69 setback while the women’s meet came down to the wire as Marymount pulled away with a 103-102 win. Both Marymount squads are now 2-0 (2-0 CAC), while the Seahawk men and women are both 0-1 (0-1 CAC).
Men’s Highlights – Marymount 129, St. Mary’s 69
The foursome of senior Mike Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair), junior captains Chris Cammarata (Towson, Md./Loyola) and Ben Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga College), and freshman Nico Pinto (Lima, Peru) won gold in the 200 free relay.
Junior Joey Quase (Montgomery Village, Md./Good Counsel) captured the 1000 free, while junior Bobby Wiley (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) placed third in the same event. Junior Michael Preston (Pasadena, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) took second in the 200 free and third in the 100 free.
Pinto came in second in the 200 breaststroke, while sophomore Cam Buckingham (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) finished second in both the 200 IM and 500 free.
The quartet of Kerr, Preston, Buckingham, and freshman Gabe Grace (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Tech) were second in the 200 medley relay.
Women’s Highlights – Marymount 103, St. Mary’s 102
The women’s meet came down to the last event – the 200 free relay – as the Seahawks carried a 96-92 advantage into that event having won seven events to that point. However, Marymount’s foursome of Rachel Miskiel, Alexandra Bekampis, Amanda Sperling and Emily Campbell secured the Saint meet victory by taking first in the relay.
The foursome of juniors Brie McDowell (Doylestown, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Eleanor Koerner (North Potomac, Md./T.S. Wootton), sophomore Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) and freshman Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) captured the 200 medley relay.
McDowell and freshman Rachel Charnley (Sykesville, Md./Westminster) each won two events for the Hawks. McDowell was first in the 200 IM and the 200 back, while Charnley was first in the 200 free and the 100 free. Koerner was first in the 50 free, while Hotchko took first in the 200 fly and second in the 200 free. Sokolove was second in both the 200 IM and the 200 breast.
The Seahawks will host Randolph-Macon College in their home-opener on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00.
