Minnesota Women 199, Notre Dame 101

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming team defeated Notre Dame by a score of 199-101, held at Minnesota’s Aquatic Center, Friday night. The Golden Gophers took charge of the meet from the start and never looked back as the Gophers took home gold in 12 out the 16 events.

Double winners for the Gophers included junior standout Yuen Kobayshi. Kobayshi took first in both the 1000 freestyle, breaking her own meet record by posting a time of 9:51.09, and 500 freestyle, again breaking her own meet record in 4:50.46.

Freshman Jillian Tyler also had a strong showing for the Gophers by posting wins in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, breaking both meet records by with times of 1:01.80 and 2:15.40.

Stacy Busack was the third Gopher to take home two first-place finishes in both sprint freestyle events, by finishing the 50 freestyle with a new meet record setting time of 23.21 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.00.

Other Gophers who took home wins were senior Roxane Akradi, with a meet record setting time of 55.66 in the 100 backstroke, sophomore Deidre DeWall, with a winning time of 2:01.61 in the 200 backstroke, freshman Megan Braun, with a winning time of 56.25 in the 100 butterfly, and junior Jenny Shaughnessy, with a meet record-setting time of 2:03.84 in the 200 individual medley.

Minnesota also captured first place in both relays when the team of Akradi, Tyler, Braun, and Busack posted a winning time of 1:42.99 in the 200 medley relay and the team of McCarthy, Erin Holtmeyer, Kaylee Jamison, and Busack combined for a winning time of 1:34.26 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Laura Rings from Notre Dame took first both the 1 meter and 3 meter events, posting winning scores of 270.97 and 279.0. Alex Barstad placed second in the 3-meter (270.15) and third in the 1-meter event (255.53) to lead the Gopher divers.

Minnesota will look to build off this strong win when North Carolina travels to Minnesota on November 2nd and 3rd. Friday’s action begins at 6 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. start on Saturday at the University Aquatic Center.
