For the second day in a row, the California men's swimming team dominated the TYR Pacific Invitational, held at the Roseville Aquatic Center in Roseville, Calif., winning eight more events to finish with 1,435.50 points, compared to 791.50 points for host Pacific, and 361.00 points for UC Davis. The Golden Bears won 14 of the meet's 16 events over the two day affair.
To start off Saturday, Cal's 200 free relay of seniors Joe Whittington (20.87), Mark Eckert (21.09), Richard Hunter (21.13) and Dominic Cathey (21.45) placed first with a time of 1:24.54. Individually, junior David Russell captured both 100 back (49.18) and 200 back (1:51.42), and also swam the third leg of the Bears' victorious 800 free relay. Other members of Cal's 800 free relay, which won in a time of 6:58.24, were senior Dominik Meichtry, senior Louis Vayo and senior Michael Jafari.
Miechtry was the winner of 500 free in a time of 4:37.44 after winning the 200 free (1:41.44) on Friday. Other Saturday highlights included senior William Copeland placing first in the 100 free (45.48), senior Jernej Godec winning the 100 fly (50.39) and sophomore transfer Sean Mahoney placing first in the 200 breast (2:06.36). Mahoney, a native of Rio Vista, Calif., is a transfer from West Virginia. Godec had won the 50 free (20.97) on Friday as well.
