Minneapolis, MN , October 16th, 2007

The Big Ten Conference announced today that Minnesota junior Jon Roberts has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after a solid showing in the Gophers’ season-opening dual meet with Florida last Saturday, where the No. 10 Gophers nearly upset the eighth-ranked Gators.  Roberts led the Gopher effort, cruising to a win and a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 100 breaststroke (54.89).  Roberts was also a member of Minnesota’s victorious 200 medley relay team, who also notched to a NCAA ‘B’ cut time (1:28.86).  Roberts was also recorded a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

Roberts earns his first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor after transferring from Auburn this summer.  Roberts’ honor is the first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor for a Gopher since December 6, 2006, when Igor Cerensek was recognized.

Roberts and the Gophers continue their dual meet schedule this weekend against Iowa in Iowa City.
