Freshman Evan Wilson registered a new pool and school record for the 1,000-yard freestyle on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center with a clocking of 9:51.77 as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University by a 104-39 count in each squad’s 2007-08 season-opener. Wilson broke a record that was previously held by junior and current teammate Anthony Barrilli, who swam the race in a time of 10:06.17 in 2005.
Wilson also received first-place points in two other events on the day. He won the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle relay with clockings of 1:01.33 and 1:34.06, respectively. Freshman Nicholas Walulik was victorious in three races as well. He was part of a team that recorded a pool-setting mark of 1:41.80 in the 200-yard medley relay before notching times of 1:48.51 in the 200-yard freestyle and 48.91 in the 100-yard freestyle.
In addition, the Ducks (1-0) obtained strong performances from freshmen Matt Preedy and Thomas Takahashi. Preedy posted a clocking of 23.37 in the 50-yard freestyle and Takahashi accumulated a time of 2:07.42 in the 200-yard individual medley.
On the Women's Side, Junior captain Emily Woo and freshman Laura Barito won three races each on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming rolled past Fairleigh Dickinson by a 101-64 decision. The dual meet also served as the 2007-08 season-opener for both squads.
Woo notched top finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:59.98, 2:20.72 and 58.25, respectively. Barito also took home first-place honors for the 200-yard medley relay. On the other hand, she earned first-place points in the 100-yard butterfly with a clocking of 1:02.10 and the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.21, which is a new Stevens pool and school record. Barito broke an achievement that was never touched for six years and owned by former Ducks’ swimmer in Naomi Chin.
