In what Georgia coach Jack Bauerle called "such a great college dual meet," the fifth-ranked Lady Bulldogs held off No. 2 Stanford on Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Georgia won the final relay of the day to record a 156-144 victory. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-0, while extending their home streak to 60 consecutive victories dating back to the 1995-96 season.
"I had a feeling this meet would be like this," said Bauerle, whose team was ahead by three points going into the final race. "Stanford has a great team, and I am so proud of our ladies. It's early in the year and we are still learning who we are and what we are, but our toughness came through in this one. We won so many close races, and not just for first but also for fourth and fifth."
Georgia got a pair of victories from both Aleksandra Putra and Kelsey Ditto on Friday. Putra took the 100-yard backstroke in 54.63 and the 200y back in an NCAA automatic qualifying 1:56.06. Ditto claimed the 1,000y freestyle with a time of 9:46.87 and the 500y free in 4:48.15.
Mhyria Miller won the 100y breaststroke in 1:02.30, edging 2004 Olympian Caroline Bruce of Stanford. (Said Bauerle, "That was the upset special.") Hannah Moore took the 1-meter diving, scoring 274.12 points.
Georgia clinched the meet when the 400y free relay team of Jessica Cole, Chelsea Nauta, Anna Miller and Courtney Monsees touched in 3:21.21, .25 of a second ahead of Stanford.
The Lady Bulldogs were second in the 200y medley relay to open the meet, but Putra, Kelly McNichols, Lisa Caprioglio and Anne-Marie Botek posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:42.12.
Georgia's teams will be off until Nov. 30-Dec. 2 when they host the Georgia Invitational.
