.: NAU Tabs Rollins as Assistant

FLAGSTAFF, AZ , November 7th, 2007

Dave Rollins joins the Northern Arizona swimming and diving staff for his first year as an assistant coach with the program under 12th-year head coach Andy Johns. Rollins is no stranger to Arizona, having graduated from the University of Arizona in 2007 where he was a nine-time All-American and a NCAA National Champion.

“I’m really excited to have Andy give me my first collegiate coaching job and that he’s going out on a limb for me,” said Rollins. “There’s already a great system here, and I just hope the team can be receptive to what I have to offer, and I know I’ll learn a lot as well.”

“I hope we can have a good time but also work hard to reach our goal of winning the conference championships and getting people to the NCAA Championships.”

Rollins was a member of the University of Arizona swimming and diving team from 2002-06, and a team captain as a senior. He earned nine All-American honors from 2003-06 and in his senior year was part of the 200 medley relay team that captured the NCAA title. That relay team, on which Rollins swam the breaststroke leg, also holds the US Open record.

Rollins is a U of A record-holder in the 100 breaststroke, the 200 individual medley and the 200 medley relay.

“We are very excited to welcome Dave to our staff here at NAU,” said Johns. “His championship experience and his technical knowledge, particularly in working with our breaststrokers and medley swimmers, will be invaluable.”

Since April of 2006, Rollins has been an assistant coach with the Ford Aquatics Club in Tucson where his athletes ranged from beginners to senior national qualifiers. For one month in each of the past two summers, Rollins also served as a camp counselor and coach for the Nike Camp at the U of A under coach Greg Rhodenbaugh.

During his final year as a swimmer at Arizona, Rollins also served as a facilities attendant and lifeguard at the Hillenbrand Aquatics Center on campus.

Rollins is a native of Brockton, Mass., but lived in Vermont until 1997 when his family moved to Tucson. He graduated from Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in May, 2007.
