.: Big Ten Names Indiana's Hesen, Minnesota's Shaughnessy Swimmers of the Week, Purdue Sweeps Diving Accolades

Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week
Ben Hesen, Indiana Sr., (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville)
In facing No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Michigan, Hesen recorded seven first-place finishes and tallied five NCAA `B' cut times.  Against the Longhorns, the senior swept the 100-yard and 200 backstroke in times of 47.75 and 1:44.73, respectively, notching NCAA `B' standards in both.  In the same meet, he aided the Hoosier 200 medley relay team to a winning and NCAA `B' time of 1:28.37.  The Jeffersonville, Ind. native's NCAA `B' time of 47.77 in the 100 butterfly was good for third-place.  Squaring off against the Wolverines, Hesen swept all four backstroke events meeting another `B' cut time in the 100 back (48.51).  This marks the second career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor for the Indiana native.

Big Ten Men's Diver of the Week
Kyle Mitrione, Purdue So., (Haddonfield, N.J. /Haddonfield Memorial)
Mitrione guided the Boilermakers to double victories last weekend squaring off against Notre Dame, Northwestern and Texas A&M.  In Friday's meet, the sophomore diver scored a personal best of 333.50 off the three-meter board which is an NCAA Zone qualifier.  On Saturday, Mitrione repeated his first-place performance on the three-meter board scoring 324.10 and was runner-up from the one-meter board, posting a NCAA Zone Qualifying mark of 335.35.  The New Jersey native earns his first weekly award.

Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week
Jenny Shaughnessy, Minnesota Jr., (Rochester, Minn./ John Marshall)
Shaughnessy claimed victory in three of her four events to help Minnesota overtake North Carolina by a score of 208.5-160.5.  Her times in the 200- (2:03.30) and 400-yard individual medleys (4:20.25) and 200 freestyle (1:48.90) were season bests and all meet the NCAA `B' standard.  The Rochester, Minn., native also participated on the first-place 800 free relay squad, which posted a `B' standard time of 7:23.08.  The junior Gopher picks up her first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor.

Big Ten Women's Diver of the Week
Ashley Karnes, Purdue So., (Bloomington, Ind./ Bloomington North)
Karnes placed first in all three of her diving events last week, providing quality points in meets against Notre Dame and Northwestern.  The sophomore's execution off the three-meter board versus Northwestern set a season-high score of 293.05, and her mark from Friday's meet against Notre Dame on the one-meter of 271.95 qualified her for the NCAA Zone Regionals.  The Indiana native is honored with her first weekly Big Ten award.
