Washington & Jefferson College senior Kaitlyn Orstein (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) earned a pair of NCAA “B” Cut victories as the Presidents opened the 2007-2008 men’s and women’s swimming seasons with a sweep of Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.
Orstein helped the W&J women record a 106-64 victory, while the President men notched a 114-69 win. Washington & Jefferson had the first-place finisher in all 26 events.
Orstein just finished shy of earning automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships during her wins in the 100-meter breastroke (1:13.02) and 200-meter IM (2:22.43).
The W&J men were paced by freshman Patrick Neidig (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), who won two events. Neidig won the 100-meter (1:06.54) and 200-meter (2:09.39) freestyle events.
Junior Brittany Bertoli (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman Jaclyn Andrews (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) were triple winners for the W&J women.
Andrews helped the 200-meter medley (2:08.77) and 200-meter freestyle (2:01.58) relays to victories, while also claiming first place in the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.13).
Bertoli also swam on the winning 200-meter relay team, while garnering individual wins in the 100-meter butterfly (1:10.34) and 200-meter freestyle (2:21.97).
Junior Susanne Seward (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) and freshman Kelly Newsome (Morristown, Tenn./Morristown West Hamblem) also were double-winners for the Presidents. Seward won the 50- (28.88) and 100-meter (1:03.76) freestyles, while Newsome earned top honors in the 400- (4:57.96) and 800-meter (10:17.61) freestyle events.
Freshman Brandon Boyer (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) won the 100-meter freestyle (57.32), while also swimming a leg on the winning 200-meter medley relay (1:56.25). Sophomore Mark Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) also swam on the winning relay and then claimed the 50-meter freestyle (25.95).
Freshmen Maxwell Mock (Cheswick, Pa./Central Catholic) and Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) swam a leg on the winning 200-meter freestyle relay (1:43.90). Mock won the 800-meter freestyle (9:23.02), while Smith claimed the 400-meter freestyle (4:28.81).
The Presidents host Mount Union in the home season opener on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
