.: UCONN Captures Terrapin Cup

Annapolis, MD , November 19th, 2007

The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team won the Terrapin Cup at the University of Maryland. The event took place over the course of three days. The Huskies led at the end of the first two days heading into the final day of competition on Saturday. Nine teams competed in the men's division, seven in the women's.

The men scored a total of 955 points in three days, while the women tallied 700. Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) continued her assault on the UConn record books with her fourth school record of the meet. She swam the 100 freestyle in 51.06.

Men's team scores were: Connecticut 955, West Chester 800, Maryland 697, William & Mary 533, Drexel 397, Villanova 227, Mary Washington 195.  For the women it was the Huskies 700, Maryland 609, W&M 585, Richmond 514.5, Villanova 462, Navy 320, West Chester 315, Drexel 237.5 and Mary Washington 110.

"We swam very fast tonight," said Maryland Interim Head Coach Jarod Schroeder. "Eric (Cullen) swam one of his best times tonight, while Chris (Rouchard) swam his best time in the mile. It was very exciting to come back at night and swim with that intensity."

Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec), Frisk Driscoll (Westport, Conn.), Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) and Tomaz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) picked up first place finishes for the Huskies. Davidson set the school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.98.

Astiz swam the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.45. He was followed in second place by teammate John Hogan (Walkersville, Md.) and his time of 1:51.77.

Sobek took the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.03.

Driscoll led the pack in the 1650 freestyle clocking in at 15:50.29.

 

UCONN will return to the pool after the new year for a January 26th dual meet against Drexel and Rhode Island. The meet will take place at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on the UConn campus and is set for a 1 p.m. start.
