Meet Results

It was a wire to wire finish at the Coe Natatorium in Cedar Rapids, IA but in the end both Kohawk teams walked away with the wins highlighted by an NCAA qualify mark on the 1 meter springboard.  The Lady Kohawks topped the Vikings 120-100 while the mens action had the Kohawks on top 98-75.

Augustana jumped out to an early lead winning the first three events but the Lady Kohawks came charging back in a big way sweeping the 50 free with Emily Blakenship leading the pack to earn her first victory on the night.

Augie, jumped right back in it when Katie Rowland won the 200 IM, but junior duo Shannon Wiegard and Rachel Robbins stopped the surge with the 2-3 finish to keep the Vikings from capitalizing.  One of only two Lady Kohawks to win two events on the evening, junior Colleen Fowler dove her way to earning her second NCAA cut on the year.  The mark now qualifies Fowler for consideration to the 2008 championships in Oxford, OH.

"We've got a long way to go yet, but this is the first time she has qualified twice with her 6 dive line-up", said Coe diving coach Gerry Maxwell.  After the diving break the Viking Sara Hlavin edged out Coe's Anna Petersen to take the 100 butterfly.

The Lady Kohawks came charging back with wins in the 100 free and the 100 back from juniors Holly Broadwater and Anya Gersib.  The Lady Kohawks split the next four events when Blankenship and Fowler each earned their second victories on the night winning the 100 Breast and the 3 meter springboard.

Coe Head Coach Justin Jennings said, "This was a team win in the truest sense of the phrase.  It wasn't our event winners that won this meet tonight; it was our 2nd through 5th place finishers that allowed us to take this meet.  You take away the 18 uncontested points in diving that Colleen gave us and it's still a two point win but you quickly realize how important those 2 through 5th place finishes were."

Jennings added, "I am so proud of them for getting behind each other, it was that support that allowed us to take some of the close points."

On the mens side it was a completely different story with the Kohawks winning 10 of the 11 events contested and snapping a dual meet losing streak that dated back to 2005-2006.  The Vikings took the 400 medley relay uncontested, but that was the last time they were able to score first place points the rest of the meet.

Coe First-Year Ben Potts, fresh off a very successful cross country season, took one of his three wins on the evening in the 1000 yard free (10:58.31).  Next up was First-Year Peter Curran in the 200 free followed by Junior Andrew Visser in the 50 free.  Senior Matt Argotsinger got in on the action when he won the 200 IM (2:11.58) and 100 fly (56.93).  Visser stepped up for win number two in the closest event on night, the 100 free.  It was neck and neck the whole way but he edged out the Vikings Drew Clinton by .03 winning the event in 51.91.  Curran and Potts each got their second wins on the night in the 100 back and the 500 free. Visser completed the Kohawks individual event sweep when he came up big in the 100 breast and took his own third individual event.

The quartet of Argotsinger, Potts, Curran, and Junior Scott Weinheimer rounded out the night winning the 800 free relay.

"I couldnt be happier for these five guys," said Jennings. "We are a small team right now, so right away we are in a hole with no depth.  I told them before the meet started that if they wanted to have a chance to win this meet we had to win every event.  I was a little concerned in the distance events because Ben [Potts] just came back to us.  But wow did he have a great meet."

Jennings added, "Bens not even the guy that I would point to; Scott [Weinheimer] is the guy that made this possible.  He came in and scored some big points for us in the 200 IM and 500 Free and did his part on the 8 free relay."

The Kohawks return to action when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on December 8th.
