The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving team split Saturday’s meet with Towson, as the men were victorious by a score of 160-107, while the women fell, 171-122.
On the men’s side, the Retrievers (3-1) won 14 of 16 events, recording 1-2-3 sweeps in 10 events, while the Tigers (1-5) came out on top in just two events, the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
Junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) was a triple winner for the Retrievers, as he led sweeps of 100, 200, and 500 freestyles with times of 47.30, 1:41.56, and 4:42.73, respectively. Bronson also teamed with sophomore Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), and freshmen Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) to take the 400 free relay with a time of 3:10.99.
Reitz added two victories of his own, turning in times of 51.89 and 1:57.06 to lead Retriever sweeps of the 100 and 200 butterfly events, while Mattingly was fastest in the 50 free, as he led a Retriever sweep with a time of 21.92.
Reitz and Mattingly also combined with sophomore Rasmus Kutt (Tallinn, Estonia/Gustav Adolf Gymnasium) and senior Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:36.45. Kutt added an individual victory as he led the Retrievers to a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.42.
Freshmen Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute), Mike Morabito (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy), and Chris Cheng (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) led the final event sweeps for the Retrievers as Carson turned in a winning time of 9:45.97 in the 1000 free, Morabito recorded a score of 216.15 in 1-meter diving, and Cheng scored 224.33 on the 3-meter board.
The only other individual winners for the Retrievers were junior Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Svetozar Markovic), who won the 100 back in a time of 52.60 and senior Adam Eiben (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who was victorious in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.57.
On the women’s side, the Retrievers (2-3) totaled three double-winners on the day, as junior Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School), sophomore Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/J.G. Jankovskeho), and freshman Crystal Gall (Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Canada/Dr. Martin LeBoldus) combined for six Retriever victories on the day. The Tigers (6-1) won the remaining 10 events, including both relays.
Cantwell turned in times of 1:05.94 and 2:21.00 to take the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, Kaplanova recorded times of 1:01.00 and 2:09.19 to win the 100 and 200 backstrokes, and Gall was victorious in the diving events with scores of 246.07 and 254.55 on the 1- and 3-meter boards, respectively.
