.: Diablo Valley Women, Orange Coast Men Capture California CC Titles

Fremont, CA , May 5th, 2007

There was plenty of state championship hardware to go around, but the duo of Joe Krone and Damien Bernard got flat-out greedy this weekend as they led Orange Coast to its second consecutive California Community College Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Championship.   On the women's side, American River’s Anne Scott and Diablo Valley’s Mary Struempf both won three individual State Titles.  Scott was named the 2007 State Swimmer of the year but Streumpf led Diablo Valley to the State Team Crown.

The Pirates from Costa Mesa battled the Pirates from Ventura as the two teams grappled for the final point lead. Ventura boasted two relay wins and three individual champions, including the Meet’s Top Performance by Kneif Lohse in the 400 individual medley. Orange Coast also won a pair of relays and five individual events, including a pair of titles from both Joe Krone and Damien Bernard. Chaffey’s Akbar Nasution was named the State Swimmer of the Year after posting wins in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle events. Orange Coast Coach Anthony Iaocopeti earned State Coach of the Year honors for the second time.

Diablo Valley won the first women’s State Swimming title in 1978 and on the 30th anniversary of that win they corralled the program’s eighth title. The Vikings won the crown in impressive form and were virtually assured the title after the first day, but Sierra and Santa Rosa still put on a good show for the runner-up position. Sierra was led by Lauren Caines, who earned the Top Performance Award for the 1650 freestyle, but still needed to win the 400 free relay to beat State Coach of the Year Jill McCormick’s Santa Rosa Bear Cubs.
