.: Ranking the Classes: #3 - Michigan

May 15th, 2007

Michigan - “They’re getting everybody now.” That’s how one rival coach summed up Bob Bowman’s recruiting learning curve. While the Wolverines didn’t sign everybody (Tennessee did), they clearly claimed some of the top talent.

Dan Madwed (Stamford, CT) grades out as the top recruit in the country, but count him in the class of 2009. The National teamer will wait for a year to continue training in North Baltimore. In basketball and football that type of thing has become an invitation for other coaches to keep recruiting, but with Bowman’s legacy at NBAC, don’t count on it. Tyler Clary (Riverside, CA) is a top-ten recruit and past captain of the National Junior team member who, like Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, MN) is a backstroke and IM specialist. Kennedy’s decision is the biggest Gopher state defection since Tom Malchow chose the ‘other’ U of M.

In Tony Wahl (Detroit), the Wolverines kept the best in-state swimmer at home. James Ridgeway (Chicago) is the 7th fastest 100 breaststroker which makes the signing of Jared Miller (11th) and Sam Wensman (18th). Then again, big brother Paul flamed out at Texas a few years back so Miller and Wensman’s signing serves as added insurance and ensures they don’t sign anyplace else. Maybe that coach was right, they are getting everybody.
