.: Ranking the Classes: #2 - Tennessee

May 15th, 2007

Tennessee - If you match up any team’s class against Tennessee – one through thirteen – nobody can hold a candle to the class John Trembley and crew assembled for next fall. This year’s class was a culmination of several things – the new Alan Jones center, a committed team effort, and JT and Joe Hendee working the trenches. Seven swimmers graded out at 2400 points or higher – equivalent to ‘B’ cuts in at least three different events.

Five sub-21 sprinters dot the roster including Arizona transfer Jonas Persson. After sitting out this past season, Swede could be a favorite to win the 200 freestyle. Norbert Trandafir (Romania) is a European Junior Champion and second only to Florida State’s Scott Baker in the fifty free. Then take your pick – Yoris Grandjean (Belgium), Henrik Sjoholm (Sweden) and Michael DeRocco (from JT’s home turf in Niskayuna, NY) would make almost anyone else’s 200 freestyle relay. Russian Junior record-holder Sergey Bebyakin joined the team in January, and will swim breaststroke come fall.

Even holding aside the internationals, the Volunteers enlisted several American kids including a pair of in-staters who will contribute. The aforementioned DeRocco will be aided by flyer/IMer Michael Cristy (Indianapolis). Backstrokers Brad Craig (Midland, MI) and Patrick Beasley (Kenosha, WI) extend the national presence.

With this class, UT ensured that when the Jones Center welcomes its first patrons next winter, there's plenty of Volunteers.
