.: Ranking the Classes: #1 - Georgia

May 14th, 2007

Georgia – In the land of press releases, few coaches can hold a candle to the eminently quotable Jack Bauerle. For nearly four decades, the longtime Georgia coach has waxed poetic about his swimmers and their accomplishments and this year’s crop ensures he’ll continue to have good things to talk about for the next four years.

The class is highlighted by a pair of top five in Kelsey Ditto (Austin, TX) and Chelsea Nauta (Tampa Bay, FL). Ditto was a member of the 2005 World Championship team and is the fastest distance senior in the country while Nauta, captain of the National Junior team will extend the Bulldogs’ history of dominant relay closers Kara Lynn Joyce and Maritza Correia. With Morgan Scroggy (Canby, OR) and Courtney Monsees (San Jose, CA) the Bulldogs have four swimmers who combined would have finished sixth in the 800 free relay at this year’s NCAA Championships.

Lauren English (Montville, NJ) comes in as the third-ranked backstroker while Colleen Haase (Rockville, MD) is the second-fastest breaststroker in this year’s class. Combined they give the Bulldogs six freshmen with ‘A’ cuts coming. Georgia, long the beneficiary of the state’s generous HOPE scholarship program kept the state’s top swimmer – IMer/flyer in Lauren Cartwright – at home.

Though no individual will replace the impact made by the departure of Joyce, these seven will put Georgia back in the running for a NCAA trophy and the sheer breadth of talent will give the Bulldogs the inside track to an SEC title.
