Brittany Sasser of Amherst College twice lowered her own record in the 100-yard backstroke, and Kenyon College continued to run away with the team scoring after day two of the 26th annual NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Houston's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium on Friday.

Sasser clocked a :55.16 in the preliminaries and won the championship in :54.72. She had won the 2006 event in :55.20 to set the old record.

Kenyon, going for its 21st national team title, holds a 113-point lead over second-place Amherst through 13 events. The Ladies, who last won the national title in 2004, have scored 363 points to 250 for Amherst, 214 for Calvin College and 191 for Emory University, the defending national champion.

Kenyon added to its scoring with the title in the 200-yard medley relay, and Tracy Menzel took the win in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Emily Lesher of Nazareth College set the night's first record with her 4:22.75 clocking in the 400-yard individual medley, mainly on the strength of her :57.99 freestyle split. The previous mark of 4:23.30 by Kenyon's Kathryn Petrock in 1997 had been the oldest record in the championships.

Becky Weima of Calvin successfully defended her 2006 title in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.79.

Amherst capped the night's events with a 7:29.50 clocking in the 800-yard freestyle relay, topping Kenyon's old record of 7:33.38 set in 2004.

The Division III women's championships, hosted by the University of Houston and the Harris Country-Houston Sports Authority, continues through Saturday. The Division III men's championships will be held March 15-17, also at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
