Updates from the meet.

400 Medley Relay - No consolation here just an American Record for Hardy, Vollmer and company.  The Cal Bears got a much better lead off and anchor splits.  Lauren Rogers wasn't a 52.53 like Arizona's Hailey Degolia, but it was better than a 54.00.  Then it was primetime with likely 100 breast and 100 fly champs Hardy and Vollmer putting Cal in the driver's seat.  Emily Silver was much better than this morning.  She needed to be to hold off Nymeyer who anchored in 47.02. This is Cal's fourth women's relay title - only one of which included a gal named Coughlin.  Auburn finishes 6th - putting Arizona's lead at about 15.

50 Free - Joyce makes it four in a row - but she had to work for this one!  At the 25 it was Bradford, Nymeyer, Joyce, Jackson in 10.60, 10.62, 10.63, 10.64. Off the wall though it was all Kara Lynn - home in 21.71, just 0.03 ahead of Jackson and 0.09 up on Nymeyer.  That equals Leigh Ann Fetter's four wins in the 50.  But the points go Arizona's way.  They lead Auburn 134-127.  Stanford and Georgia have a battle going 71-68.  Dana Vollmer wins the consolations, which are just that - a consolation to the Bears who are tied with A&M in 5th.

1 Meter - They score it so it has to count.  Stanford's Cassidy Krugg had a rough morning, but a big night to best.  Indiana's Christina Loukas.  IU puts two more in consols to get on the Hoosiers on the board. Krugg must have put up something fierce considering she squeaked into finals.  Wouldn't know - truth be told it was time for a bathroom break and grab a t-shirt for the folks back home.

After qualifying 1-2 there really wasn't anyplace to go but down for Auburn, but credit

200 IM - After qualifying 1-2 there really wasn't anyplace to go but down for Auburn, but credit Ava Ohlgren for hanging tough against Whitney Myers, Julia Smit and Elaine Breeden.  Just think - we'll get to see Smit, Breeden and Ohlgren for another three years.  Myers, as expected, built up enough of a lead through the fly and back.  Smit gave the crowd of what's to come later this weekend when she went under 34.0 on the breaststroke leg.  Emily Kukors overtook, Julia Wilkinson and Breeden in the final fifty meaning Auburn will come out ahead in the points.  Welcome to NCAA's Margaret Kelly - she wins consols with a 1:57.56 - a time that would have qualified her 4th.   Wolverines will be in the running for a top-five finish.

500 Freestyle - Well maybe Adrienne Binder did have a little left in the tank.  The senior set the pace in the first 100.  Florida's Burckle regained her footing a bit in the second hundred but after that it was all lane six.  Impressive swim by Princeton's freshman Aemisegger.  Nobody was faster in the last 200 yards, but to win the race, you've got to be in the race and by the midway mark she was more than a second off the pace.  Maust, after an outstanding morning swim never got it going and fell back to 5th.  Another race within the race took place in lanes 1 and 8 where Arizona's Leone Vorster and Auburn's Maggie Bird did battle.  The pair swapped places from this morning when Vorster qualified seventh and Bird eighth.  Wouldn't it be something if the meet came down to this race between two oustanding freshmen?

200 Free Relay - It was a display - the Arizona Wildcats jumped out to a place they might stay all weekend - first place.  Joyce was out to the early lead - just 0.06 off her record, but this time it wasn't Paige Kearns, Andrea Georoff or Amada Weir backing her up.  If anything, this quartet outswam that Georgia team of 2005, but it wasn't enough to overcome Lacey Nymeyer's 21.24.  By the 100 the race was effectively over with Auburn well back of the Cats and Dogs.  Neither Georgia or Arizona had outstanding starts for the third leg, but heading into the anchor leg, there wasn't much Anna Miller could do as Lindsey Kelly strolled home in 21.81 for a new American and US Open record.  Who know's where the points will play out but after one event, but if Arizona holds on throughout the weekend - we're ready to declare Nymeyer MVP of the meet.
