.: GVSU's Newsome Suffers Stroke

Grand Rapids, MI , March 20th, 2007

Dewey Newsome, head coach of the Grand Valley State University Lakers in Allendale, Michigan, suffered a stroke on Sunday evening while dining with his wife at a local restaurant and was rushed immediately to the Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. A second stroke early Monday morning left the 62 year-old veteran coach partially paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak.

Coach Newsome, who chairs the CSCAA’s Academic All American Committee, is currently in the Intensive Care Unit undergoing evaluation. Doctors have located a blood clot in hi left temple, which they are treating with blood thinners. The next 24 hours, they say, will be the most critical.

Dewey's wife, Lanna is holding up as well as can be expected.

Mrs. Newsome asks that his friends and colleagues pray for his full recovery and that you keep him and his family in your thoughts. She asks that you remain positive and hopeful.
