Matt Sellman has been named the new men's and women's swimming coach at the University of Mary Washington, as was announced today by UMW Athletic Director Dr. Edward Hegmann. "We're excited about attracting a coach with such a strong head coaching background as Matt", said Hegmann. "His experience on deck and on the NCAA Swimming Committee will help the program."

A Bachelor of Arts graduate from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in Education, Sellman owns a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Findlay (Oh.). He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education at Lewis & Clark. A competitive swimmer at Pacific Lutheran, Sellman was a three-year All-American and a three-year Academic All-American from 1994-96. He was named the Pacific Lutheran Man of The Year in Sports in 1996.

As the head men's and women's coach at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, the past six seasons, Sellman has seen the emergence of the program from one that had just seven swimmers and a string of last place finishes in conference championships to one with 35 swimmers that regularly competes in the top half of the Northwest Conference. His programs at Lewis & Clark have rewritten the school record books, with 29 school records, and swam the first NCAA qualifying time in school history.

He is a member of the NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming Committee, is American Swim Coaches Association level four certified, and a member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America. He has also served as the aquatics director at the Bellevue Club in Bellevue, Washington, served as assistant coach at Pacific Lutheran and the university of Findlay, and taught math and social science in the Seattle School District.

Sellman inherits a women's team that has won every Capital Athletic Conference Championship in the 17-year history of the league, and finished 12th at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships. The men's team has seen similar success, claiming 13 league titles, and has posted at least one All-America performance in each of the past three years.
