Budde Named Swim Coach and Aquatics Director at Greensboro

Scot A. Budde has been named women’s swim coach and director of Aquatics at Greensboro College effective July 31st announced Pride Athletics Director Kim Strable.
Budde just completed his third season as an assistant with George Mason University’s swimming and diving program. He helped the Patriot men to a second place Colonial Athletic Association placing this year. The George Mason women finished fourth.
Budde came to George Mason after serving as the Aquatics Director at the Gilman School Baltimore from 2000-04. While at the Gilman School, Budde was a physical education teacher, pool operator and also handled several coaching responsibilities at all levels for both swimming and water polo. Budde was also an assistant swim coach for the Mariners Swim Club (2000-04).
An intercollegiate swimmer at the University of Maryland, Budde was twice team captain as well as two-time recipient of the prestigious Diehl Award for extraordinary dedication. As a student-athlete he qualified for the Athletic Honor Roll four years and was also a two-year member of the University of Maryland Student-Athlete Council.
After a one year stint as the head women’s water polo coach at the University of Maryland, he became an assistant men’s and women’s swim coach at George Mason University. Budde was responsible for designing sprint, middle-distance, distance, and stroke-oriented workouts and providing in-depth stroke evaluations and had a major role in recruiting.
"We feel fortunate to have attracted such a quality coach who is also a fantastic role model,” Strable said. “He has the interpersonal skills to go along with his high energy and technical background and we believe he is a great fit for our family-type environment."
Coach Budde has five letter-winners from last year’s Pride team. The 2006-07 Greensboro College swimming team finished 7-3 in dual meets, the best record in program history. The Pride closed the year with a solid seventh place finish (173 points) at the Atlantic States Championships at Radford University. The seventh place finish matches the third best placing in the program's 12 years of competition. Budde replaces Michelle Higdon as head coach.
"I'm thrilled to join The Pride athletics department,” said Budde. “From the time that I began researching Greensboro College, I knew that it would be a perfect fit for all involved. I see so much potential in the swim program, and I can't wait to begin working to make the team better."
Budde and his wife, Melissa, expect to relocate to Greensboro later this month. They have a seven-month-old son.
