 The No. 19 Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team (3-0) received a few strong performances from senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, OH/Notre Dame Academy), on the opening day of the Hawai’i Invitational in Honolulu, Hawai’i late Thursday evening, Jan. 4. The Irish currently leads the three teams in competition with 142 points.
 
Carroll won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.02) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.30), for her ninth and 10th individual victories of the season. Carroll also was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won their event in a time of 2:27.98. The other three members of the team were senior Rebecca Grove (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), junior Caroline Johnson (Springfield, MO/Glendale) and freshman Megan Farrell (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton).
 
Caroline Johnson also was part of the 400-yard medley relay team, along with freshman Mary Grace Godfrey (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph) and seniors Julia Quinn (Evanston, IL/Evanston) and Jessica Stephens (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) that placed second with their time of 3:51.24.
 
Grove and senior Ann Barton (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) also were event winners. Grove won the 50-yard freestyle (23.90), while Barton picked up the win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.70).
 
The Irish also had three runner-up finishes on the evening. Farrell took home second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.61). Teammates Godfrey and Quinn also had second-place finishes for Notre Dame. Godfrey was second in the 100-yard freestyle (53.06), while Quinn was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.54).
 
Sophomore Claire Hutchinson (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) and junior Katie Hopkins (Ellicot City, MD/Notre Dame Prep) both had third-place finishes for the Irish on the first day of competition. Hutchinson placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:07.44) and Hopkins finished right behind teammate Quinn in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.75).
 
Next, Notre Dame continues competing in the Hawai’i Invitational from Jan. 5-6 as the diving portion of the meet is contested.
